Kyru
HP:7
AC:16 (FF:12, T:14)

The rest of his friends arrived and they all stood around, psyching themselves up while sharing stories of their first true day in Sharn. Kyru had bummed a roll-up off a rather tough-looking patron and smoked it. He wasn't a heavy smoker, just occasionally to clear his head.

And he needed a clear head to wrap his mind around everything that's been happening.

Eventually, the appointed time was reached and they all entered the Broken Anvil. No sooner had Alo (or was it Ahlias? He didn't pay close enough attention) introduced them, the halfling ushered them to a private area where they met with this Lady of House Cannith. She asked them to be seated.

"I'd prefer to stand, if you don't mind." He smirked, "Between nearly dying today and visiting that Bordello in Firelight, I've spent a considerable amount of time on my back today. I'd much rather be on my feet, if you don't mind, m'lady." He performed a slight but unawkward bow.

Broken Anvil Tavern

The lady introduces herself as Elaydren d'Vown, of House Cannith. As she does so, the halfling who welcomed you brings three pitchers. One of ale, one wine, and one water. The pitchers and several glasses are left on the table. She then bows and departs. Once she is out of earshot, Lady d'Vown gets down to business.

"I have been working with Provost Geldem to recover a family heirloom. We were to meet earlier tonight, but as you know, he never made it. When he didn't show, I sent one of my men to investigate. He saw what transpired, and I had him arrange for this meeting."

She continues, "The heirloom, according to family legends, was locked away in a foundry that dates back to pre-Galifar Sharn. Poor Bonal believed he discovered the location of the foundry in an ancient House Cannith journal. I was going to fund an expedition to go to the site, but without Bonal...." her voice trails off. Then she leans in close.

"Perhaps you would be willing to recover the heirloom for me. For a generous fee of course."

Alo scratched his chin and thought about the woman's offer. He knew he'd read something a few years ago relating to that house, or that time period or something. He just couldn't quite think what...

It certainly seems like a good deal, but Kyru knew how good deals went. Quietly, he watched her, weighing every word and action.

(Sense Motive Check (1d20+1=8))

And it all sounded splendid to him. Of course, maybe that was his greedy streak speaking for him.

"So, how m...I mean generous are we talking here, m'lady?"

Alo's Knowledge:
Galifar was the name of the largest nation on the continent of Khorvaire. However, it was split during The Last War into 5 nations. Breland was one of the 5 nations. Sharn is the capital of Breland.

House Cannith was formed before the days of Galifar. It was headquartered in Cyre, another of the 5 nations. Cyre was completely destroyed during The Last War.

Sharn is a city that over time has expanded upwards, instead of out. The newest and richest parts of the city are the top-most levels. The lower levels are old, and impoverished normally. There are also rumors that the city was built on the ruins of a goblinoid empire that existed before the days of Galifar. The Dhakanni Empire did exist, without a doubt. But whether any such unexplored ruins from that long-dead empire still exist is highly doubtful.

{OOC: with a check like that, you could've gotten a lot of specific information, but because the topic you were researching was broad, I gave a broad answer, which gave a little bit of information about a lot of topics.

You would also be aware of all of the information Jai gave about House Cannith in the OOC thread.}

The lady looks at Kyru. Her eyes seem clear of any deception. You don't think she's lying. But there may be something more that she isn't exactly volenteering.
"Very Generous.

I'm willing to pay a total of 1,000 Pieces of Gold for the successful recovery of the heirloom. I'll give you each 50 Gold Pieces to outfit yourselves for the expedition, and the rest upon delivery."

Alo
HP: 7/7
AC: 11 (vt:11, ff:10)

"House Cannith were renowned for their craftsmanship, so this heirloom would be something to see. That alone would make the trip worth it, but the fact that Sharm might have been built on the top of ruins of the Dhakanni Empire is fascinating. I think we should do this Kyru." Alo became very excited at the thought of the books or trinkets they might find under the city, and the only things he liked more than soft beds and good meals, were books.

He smiled. "You're asking us to go into the Depths of Sharn, away from the protection of the Watch, with all the riff-raff and monsters down there in a dungeon that's probably full of traps which, while old, most likely are still just as deadly as the day they were forged?"

He sighed.

"How 'bout this...20% up-front. That's 200 GP. Plus the 50 GP for expenses. You pay us the rest upon completion of the task."

Lady d'Vown shakes her head and the look of her face shows thinly veiled distaste for his greed. "You showed that you don't need the protection of the Watch when you took on that warforged. If I gave you more than that up front, you are more likely to leave with the downpayment without bothering to complete the mission.

But, if my terms aren't agreeable, I can always find someone else."

{OOC: Just as a side note for everyone, a commoner usually earns 1 Silver piece a day. 1 gold piece is 10 silver pieces, and she's offering you 50 up front, and another 150 each when you get back. thats a lot of money for level 1 chars.}

Kyru's poker face never faltered. "Yes, I suppose with the considerable resources of your House, you could have any number of travellers go down and fetch that heirloom for you. That's what confuses me as to why you came to us. In my experiences, these affairs can be rather messy. You've been a very generous Patron to offer us 50 gold piece for expenses...I was simply asking for another 50 for each of us to further equip ourselves, which we were willing to absorb out of our over all payment. I give you my solemn oath that, even should all my fellow mates here fall in that dungeon, I will bring you that heirloom. I've got nothing in this life but my good word and I intend to keep it. Are you absolutely certain you can't offer us that 20% up-front?"

"The resources of the House are considerable. But I am not privvy to the resourses of the House in Sharn for this venture.

House Cannith's leadership has been disjointed since the destruction of Cyre. I am loyal to the leader of my portion of the family which operates out of Aundair. I have nothing against the Sharn-based family, but I am here to further the efforts of Baron Jorlanna d'Cannith of Aundair.

As outsiders to Sharn, I know you are not associated with the local family, so by hiring you, I don't have to include them in this venture. Plus, you were able to take on the warforged and survive. That speaks for your talents.

And my price stands as offered."

Alo wanted to do this, and he didn't really mind if they got payed. He thought that he was likely to find something far more precious to him than gold down there. If Kyru kept this up they might miss out though. "I think we should accept the offer as it is. This is too good a chance to miss out on."

The cleric strokes his beard thoughtfully and responds," A very generous offer m'lady to have 50 gold forthcoming in advance and 200gp upfront, and this hierloom I shall indeed be interested to inspect..cleric of the Sovereign Host I may be, but a dwarf knows craftsmanship when he or she views it...I am more than willing to take up your offer"

Amnile stiood at the back of the group and merely Observed. He let the 'face' Kyru do his job. Personally he was undecided. He wanted to go opn a quest but is still sore from fighting last night.

With a smile the Lady gives each of you a small sack that jingles with coins, 50 GP each. Anyone could now easily pay for their wounds to be healed, if the cleric with the party doesn't feel up to it.

"Excellent.

If you will hand me the Journal, I can show you were to look."
She holds her hand out towards Ahlias.

Ahlias had been pondering showing the woman the mystical journal he had been holding onto, but up until now, he wasn't sure if it would be in his best interest. Ahlias had considered taking the Journal directly to the University as a token of his merit for joining.

Now though, the Warrior saw an even better opportunity. A musty old tome without any words in it, or a long-last House Cannith artifact, and the possibility of countless other ancient treasures from pre-Galifar Sharn? And, the chance for a real adventure. Ahlias couldn't pass this up.

The Fighter smiled and drew the book from his belt-pouch and tossed it onto the table. His face held confidence, and he crossed his thick arms over his chest and waited.

"It's empty you know, but maybe it's in Wizards Speech. I'm not a Wizard, so...I'll leave that to you House fellows. Just show me where I need to go - I seem to be caught up with these folks, and they seem decent enough. I'll guard their backs and your treasures...just point me to where I need to go!"

Ahlias glanced at the others. He hoped they wouldn't have an issue with his coming along. Regardless, he would probably follow anyway. "You folks have any issues with my accompanying you?"

Broken Anvil

The woman takes the book in her hand, and as she does, the symbol on her ring begins to glow in unison with the mithral thread forming a symbol on the cover of the book. She opens the book and the blank pages begin filling themselves with delicate script and line drawings.

She turns the book to a specific page, studies it for a moment then pulls a folded map from inside her cloak and scribbles a note on it.

"The location of the lost foundry is deep within the Dorasharn Tower." Lady Elaydren proclaims. "Fifty-seven levels below the towers present day sewer system." She gives you the book and the map in her hand, showing the sewer system and a path into the depths of Dorasharn Tower.

"The relic I seek is an adamantine plate in the shape of a seven-pointed star about the size of your hand. It has no special powers by itself, but has an ancient schema... A piece of pattern used by House Cannith artificers of old to craft unusual items. Recover this piece of history for us, and House Cannith will be extremely grateful. If you succeed, you will have the goodwilll of my House."

Can't a fella be greedy?

Kyru
HP:7/7
AC:16 (FF:12, T:14)

That's what he was waiting to hear.

Sure, if he could've schmoozed a little more money out of this deep-pocket player, he would definitely have taken it. But his real intentions were to have her offer the political clout of House Cannith.

The Dragonmarked Houses were not suppose to interfere in any way with the political systems of the ruling parties of the Five Nations...but by the claws of the Keeper, it seemed ignorant to believe that things were possible otherwise.

Kyru bowed to Elaydren. Quietly, trying to avoid the others hearing him, he softly intoned "You've a shrewd sense of business and a great eye for pawns Lady d'Vown...two things I can greatly appreciate. I've no illusions about our actual place in these schemes, m'lady. But your offer was generous...we'll get you your precious trinket."

A serpentine smile was his final offering of honor to the Lady Elaydren d'Vown before he turned to his mates and said, "Well, my friends, shall we leave immediately or shall we retire for a night at this wonderful establishment and start fresh tomorrow?"

Ahlias eyed Kyru with a bit of unease. That man was sneaky, and he wasn't trusting in and of himself. It seemed his heart was in the right place, but he had a greedy, weedling streak about him Ahlias couldn't quite get around to liking. Regardless, he didn't know that man, and he wasn't quick to judge.

The Warrior looked over Lady Elaydrin as she and Kyru finsihed up their own dialogue. 57 levels beneath Dorasharn Tower?! That was incredible, possibly going underground. he knew the Towers were built up over the old layers of older towers, and he heard rumor that there were even more ancient ruins beneath old Sharn, but he had no idea how far everything really went. One thing he did know, for certain, was the presence of Threats in the lower levels. Everyone knew that. It was a place scolding nannies threatened to send misbehaving children. Not a nice place at all.

Ahlias nods to Amnile and closes his eyes for a few seconds, "My vigilance shall not go unappreciated in the Nightmare places we are now destined to go."

Broken Anvil Tavern

"That is correct. Sewer Rats are not the only thing you will need to worry about."

To Kyru she says "Retire for the night? The sun has just rose. Why didn't you sleep last night before coming here?" The expression on her face shows she might be wondering if Kyru has the sufficient mental capacities to take on this mission, if he doesn't realize he should sleep at night.
