Sometime Last Week

It was just another night at the Feral Dog. Miners drank bad booze, and bet their wages against eachother on the dog fights. It was quiet tonight. Well, it was noisy, as usual, but there hadn't been any fists thrown or knives pulled.

Jaiden was sitting at a table, trying to avoid getting involved in the bustle of the fight pits. She was nursing a glass of Miner's Milk... An especially syrupy brew local to this town. Mostly, she wished that Mohan would hurry up and arrive. She kept glancing towards the door, waiting for him to enter.

It hadn't been a particularly good week for her. The job working as a bouncer at the Midnight Salute, a local house of ill repute, was lousy, and this town just didnt have any other options to offer a better life. She could still feel a bit of tenderness around her eye where one of the local patrons got a little rowdy a day ago.

She heard the creak of the door and looked up, hoping to see Mohan. However, it was a new face coming through. One she didn't recognize, which immediately caught her as odd, since there were so few people who visited this place. The newcomer was an elf woman, and that made it all the more strange. The only elves in town were those few who worked for the Moonmeadow mine... Well, if you could call what they did work that is. None of them would be caught dead inside the mine itself getting their hands dirty.

This new elf didn't look like she was afraid of a little bit of work though. She had an air of confidence around her, and as she spotted the game room, she gave a half smirk and walked up to the dagger-throwing board. She wrangled one of the miner's into a game and beat him handily. Afterwards, she started asking around for a new challenger...

Jaiden

Beyond the stench of the room, the echo of the challenge definately caught her attention. She loved nothing more than showing people exactly how un-worthy they were compared to her, because she was just that good. Placing the milk down she stood and looked to the patron with dark emerald eyes that refracted the light of the room. "I'll take that challenge."

The elf smiles and says "Glad to hear it."

"The rules are simple. There are two rings on the target, and a bullsye. The first round, you have to hit the outter ring or better. The Second round you have to hit the inner ring or better. Fail and you are eliminated. Each round after that, whoever is left has to hit the bullseye each round, or else they are eliminated. Last woman standing wins."

One of the miners, filled with courage from drink, steps up to join the game. "Last man standing, hot-stuff! I'm in too. Do you ladies care to make it interesting with a little 'friendly' wager? Five Sovereigns!"

Two other men, will less machismo, also step up and join the game, and each puts in their 5 coins.

The elf looks to Jaiden. "I'm in for a little wager. What about you, sister?" She tosses her coins into the pot.

Jaiden

Knowing the drunkards all too well and the fact that an alcoholic couldn't hit the broad side of a barn by throwing a cow at it, she was more than willing to show these two men their places. It wasn't that she loathed men, but the ones who thought themselves so high and mighty as to jump into a 'friendly' female competition,w as just looking for pain. She joins the pot with the simple five pieces.

One of the miner's goes first. He sticks teh dagger right in the outter ring, and passes to the next round. The next man to go is the loud brute. He wobbles, but somehow, still managed to get the dagger into the bullseye. "Hah! Anyone want to drop out now?"

The dagger is passed to Jaiden, and its her turn.

The Dagger Contest

The next to take the dagger is the elf woman. "Nice throw" she says as she pries Jaiden's dagger out of the inner ring.

She steps up to the throwing line and flicks the dagger, putting it in the inner ring as well. THe last miner steps up to throw, but fails to hit the outter ring. He is the first eliminated.

The next round begins and The first miner throws the dagger. He hitts the outter circle again and is eliminated. The loud brute throws and this time, his dagger just barely nicks the inner circle, keeping him in the game by a thread.

The dagger is passed to Jaiden a second time.

Jaiden

The first elimination she was most pleased about. Realistically this was a game between her and the elven woman not her and these two idiots. She didn't reply to the comment verbally but nodded in response. Taking the dagger she flung it solidly once more but the handle tipped off of her claws and sent it at an odd angle rather than directly at the target.

Jaiden's dagger hits the outter circle this time, and she is eliminated.

The contest goes on and eventually the elf woman wins again, showing up the loud miner after only the 4th round.

After the game is over, she walks over to Jaiden's table. "Good game. Mind if I join you?"

Jaiden

Her hand opened to the opposing seat. She wasn't really one for company, but she didn't mind talking to someone of the opposite sex who was interested in something other than her figure. "I mus tell you that, although I did not win, I'm quite pleased that you did. There's nothing I loathe more than drunks winning by default or accident."

The woman waves down a server and has a couple drinks brought to the table.

"Thanks. I figured I'd use my winnings to buy us a couple drinks. I think you could've won though if it wasn't for that unlucky throw.

I'm Tirra."

Mohan

Mohan slipped through what crowd there was, a drink already in his hand. As always he was carrying basically everything he owned, apart from a few bits and pieces of little worth in a lock box in the garrison. There was a mug of ale in his hand. He must have entered at some point during the game, bought a drink and then watched quietly.

He set his mug down on the table, and pulled a stool up. "You had your fingertips lined up wrong on that last throw." He said, not feeling the need for a hello.

Tirra

"Tirra. I was just introducing myself to your friend here.

Do you play the dagger contest? You seem to know something about how its done."

Mohan

"I have played before. I just know how to throw a knife and not miss. I prefer to use larger blades and keep them in my hands though." He patted one of the shortswords attached to his belt.

Tirra

"I see. Perhaps you and I can have a friendly game later. Hopefully, with fewer interruptions than last time.

I'm from Sharn, by the way. Me and some friends have come here to explore those famous Cairns. Are you familiar with the Stirgent Cairn?"

You are familiar with the Stirgent Cairn. Its been looted and ransacked by many adventurers over the decades. No one has found anything of value in it for years now.

Mohan

"I am yes. It has been thoroughly looted. I would not think there would be anything left. If you need a guide though my fee is very low."

Tirra

"Yes, thats what everyone's been saying, but our wizard thinks he knows of a secret chamber that might have been undiscovered. I don't think we'll be needing a guide though. We are quite capable. Thank you for offering though."

{OOC: I'm going to fast-forward in time a little. If either of you want to do more interaction, feel free to pick it up as you see fit.}

The night continues, and eventually, the three of you each go your separate ways.

Mohan keeps thinking about what it would be like if he could've actually gotten in on that adventuring party, and hopefully made a fortune on riches recovered from the Cairn. He doubts very much that there is actually anything there to loot, but it doesn't hurt to dream.

About a week goes by, and by this time, everyone in town has heard the rumors about the Trio of Sharn Adventurers, and their intentions to raid the Stirgent Cairn. Most people think they are fools for thinking there is anything left.

-------

Later that week, Mohan is called to duty for the Garrison. It seems that one of the miner's kids has run away.

You stand before Lieutenant Dobrun Trent, one of the three commanding officers of the Garrison, who operate under Commander Trask. With him is his friend and the town's chief cartographer, Dietrik Cicaeda. You've worked with both of them before, and they are reasonably skilled at their respective tasks. Trent explains the situation. "A young boy, just about to become a teenager, by the name Aleck is missing. We'll be sending out scouting parties to look for him. I want you to go with Dietrik and figure out the most likely places to search. He was last seen heading north."
