Then avert your eyes and shoot your firearms blindly kitty cat of doom and destruction! Let the blood of the Grammatical fill the streets, and know then that you have made the world safe for the L33t!

I love disappearing for a week or so, and then returning to find out what kind of stupidity has infused itself into .org. Personally I hate text speak. LOL is so overused that I have begun to assume that either everyone who types this phrase is trapped in a room laughing like Ritalin-deprived maniacs, or that they're just to lazy to type a true emotion. Using an abbreviation to fill in any type of emotion is the perfect display of complete illiteracy. While we're on the topic of bad role playing ideals...

Whenever I see someone type a post in first-person...

There are times when
I'm all by myself, and I concentrate as hard as I can to see if I can't make
myself catch on fire like the human torch. And mark my words, Newbie, if I
ever pull it off, I will be back here to destroy this place. ~Dr. Cox~

The point of role playing on .org is to converse with some of the best role players that I've ever known. If you come here using incorrect grammar, punctuation, text speak, and other annoying methods that make me want to beat you into the ground, AND if you don't care to improve your capabilities as a role player, then you should leave. Period.

Most of us are here to play with other role players of higher caliber that can raise the bar of our own capabilities as a role player. If you refuse to improve your role playing ways, then you're only disrespecting every person on this board, and you should leave.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Text speak is somewhat of a turnoff for me personally also, but there are times when I'm more tolerant of it...when I and some associates are having some silly fun on yahoo confrerencing and such. I text speak sometimes to a limited extent, but used to excess it gets ridiculous.

I agree. Text speak as far as just messing around or OOC chitchat isn't a big deal. When it's used IC is when it gets annoying for me.

rofl, zomg wtf! txt spk iz leet! u no it rawks!

Seriously, though. It is annoying. I, too, have no problem with the occasional "lol" or something else. Aside from that, though. It's pretty much ZOMGSTFU!

Well I have been thinking on this one and while I agree a well written post is nicer to read than say some random mess of text, yet we should understand that not everyone has a good grasp of the English language. This of course is a paramount issue on the net when dealing with people who are not native to English speaking countries. Although often times I have seen non-natives write better than natives. Now when it comes to say L33t/L337/Leet speak, I agree that will drive anyone, who does not speak it consistently, insane, and often is used more as a short hand way to convey something be it laughter or domination. None the less all members no matter their educational background or experience in Rp are here for the same reason and that is to RP and interact with others with similar interests. Yet I found something I found above outright wrong posted here, and that was telling someone if they lack in the grammatical, spelling or text speak they should leave. We are not a site that should delegate what people can or cannot write in if they have fun doing it, yet if you do not enjoy it do not Rp with a person who does post in that fashion. The AMBC, Ayenee.org, and NewAyenee.org were made and continued so that players can find and participate in RP and have fun, weather or not they post in some form of unintelligible English or not.

I totally agree, Mith. Thanks for pointing that out.

My original purpose here was to offer people a way to improve themselves. Not to belittle people (except for scorn and vaticus, but thats ok because they deserve it :p). And it definitely wasn't meant to force people to leave.

I get a sense of deja vu when I read the above...it is kind of like some of the things said about the Middle-earth based roleplaying organisation I was a councilor of on Lord of the Rings Online Forums and later their affiliate site www.lotrosource.com. There were plenty there to go on about us being elitists and so forth, but that was where the misunderstandings were. We were only, as a organisation(called Hallowed Association of Roleplayers), wishing to help improve the quality of rp on the rp forums there with good grammatical skills and a rank structure to assess the progress of members through the organisation. It basically started off with the intention of creating better roleplay and some of us there being tired of one or two liner Middle-earth roleplay posts. We disbanded around November 2006 due to growing inactivity, but our message had gotten across at any rate.

So, indeed, this thread isn't about belittling everyone(yes I know SJs reasons), but it is presenting a good point about the language barriers many of us run into when roleplaying with others.

In defense of Tifferz, I would like to state that she didn't say that just because they suck they should leave. She stated that if you have no interest in improvement you should leave. And I quote:

If you refuse to improve your role playing ways, then you're only disrespecting every person on this board, and you should leave.

I don't think she meant that if you couldn't type well, you should get out. Personally, I agree with that statement. Everyone has room for improvement, even the so-called "Elitists." I'm a metaphor whore with a mission, but, I only use the word l33t loosly and jokingly. I'm a far cry from an elitist. In addition, the only people who would find the statement offensive would be those who aren't seeking improvement and if they're that stupid, they deserve to be offended. Frankly, if you think you know it all, you better hit the books harder than anyone else.

Not seeking self-improvement is like going to school, failing a course, and then blaming the teacher because you didn't apply yourself and when things like that happen, no one can blame anyone but themselves.

I agree people should seek self improvement, however I do not see how it is the communities measure by which we can claim to ensure that a person is improving as a person. Everyone is capable of growth/Change certainly this is something we can all see as a fact of existence.

However I can see some, who shall we say, lack the ability to spell or post in a grammatical correct standard, who are trying and will find that kind of comment insulting. Because then it's not are they trying it's are they trying hard enough to be accepted by the community, and if they screw up they will be ostracized for it.

Certainly I do not believe Tifferzzz meant for it to be taken in a poor fashion, yet with out clarifying it, others could misinterpret it as a far less than welcoming kind of post.

You all sound like idiots.

Shut up and go RP.

No one is being asked to leave, for any reason. Even if I want to slap you(mith) for your terrible ability to form cohesive sentances, you are still welcome here.

Furthermore, just because someone doesn't want to improve their RP doesn't mean anything is wrong with them. Its entirely possible that they view RP as a hobby and are happy with it as it is, no matter how it measures up to someone else's standards. The original post is only directed at people who feel they have room for improvement and wish to engage in such activities. If you are happy with your abilities, good for you. If you want to improve, good for you. No one on either side is wrong.

If a person is having fun with their RP, then they are doing it right. Thats the bottom line.

See now this post is just getting ridiculous. People saying people should leave, people saying speach is wrong and text is wrong.

Here is my two cents.

I know I am guilty of text and the so called 133t speach. Hell I am an inventor of new text words and leet words and everyone of you know I am a capable roleplayer. I think I make superior quality posts and have a knack of improving on things that were left open.

But when I go out of character I type how I please. If I see some friends bsing around I will do the same. I have played mmo's for years so text speach comes second nature to me and if it bothers you then be warned my ooc posts will most likely have them. If you choose not to read my posts because of that then you may just miss out on something and if you want me to leave over text speach in ooc posts then you truly are.

Not that I am going to leave or anything. I gotta make SJ pull the hair out of his head and increase that chip on his shoulder.

I still don't understand how this turned into a debate. For the record, I'm not saying anyone should leave, just clarifying that I didn't think that Tifferzzz meant it offensively. As far as standards, everyone has their own set and again, I'm not judging whether or not anyone is trying to improve, just stating that there is room for improvement. My opinion = My opinion. Nobody cares about my opinion anyway, right? Right. And, while I find people who use "text speech" IC to be complete idiots, I personally enjoy a good bout of LoL repeated a million times. LoL. LoL. LoL. LoLxLoL=LoL Infinity.

-wanders off to annoy Marco by refusing to cook dinner and will make it a point to blame SJ and Bradley for that-

-pokes Mith with a spork- Kim. I'm not illogical. Maybe a little insane every now and then but definitely not illogical. At least, not most of the time. But, that's a woman's prerogative. :p

@Illogical - Your math is awesome. LoL x LoL = LoL infinity.

@Mith & Scorn - You both have a very high opinion of yourselves if you think you are doing anything that irritates me. I'm a happy-go-lucky kinda guy. Sorry to disappoint.

Sorry Kim, my mind blanked when I tried to think of your real name, I blame it on my American History class.

Also SJ I know I bug you often enough.
