What is a street samurai?

I have heard the term used in books, usually in futuristic sci-fi. What does 'street samurai' mean exactly?

Think of a mercenary, basically. A warrior who is paid to do jobs, much like samurai were back in Fuedal Japan, any sort of job that could require force. Assassination, bodyguards, hunts, ambushes, that sort of thing. At least the version on here is.

I'm pretty sure 'street samurai' is most commonly associated with the Shadowrun setting (see here for an explination: http://www.cs.utk.edu/~kreed/streetsamurai.html)

The stereotypical street samurai usually has several reflex enhancements (wired reflexes, etc) along with a bladed weapon of sometimes and most often carries at least a pistol. They are indeed usually thought of to be mercenaries for hire. Think modern day ronin.

Hmmmm I did some searching on this last night and it was bassicaly an every thug kind of group in the Shadowrun Game. Although to define it more than that did not seem possible.

The original Street Samurai was none other than Molly Millions, made famous by William Gibson in the Sprawl Trilogy.

Just another part of the Cyberpunk world he created that was stolen wholesale by the creators of Shadowrun.

User Incognito hit the nail on the head. "Street Samurai" was a term used heavily by William Gibson to describe a recurring character of his named "Molly," who also went by "Sally."

I'm not sure if the "Street Samurai" appeared in other writings, but it's a relatively recent term that I found and grabbed onto.

Originally samurai were mercenaries hired by feudal lords to protect assets. Eventually they became wealthy enough to become politically powerful, although it took them a few hundred years to do so. Samurai tribes lived by a strict code and were expected to act accordingly.

A street samurai, then, is a hired mercenary who follows their own code and exists in modern and futuristic storylines.

My character, Katsujirou Kato, is not a street samurai. Another character of mine, "Case," is based on the street samurai model.
