Singing with the Silent Dead

While Vel thought of weapons Katy thought of her concealment. His words brought her from her thoughts and she only gave him a brief look before turning back to Fey as he moved. Fey was standing “Well then, be on your way.†He said which meant the meeting was over. Katy stood quickly and slipped between the two chairs to keep an object between herself and Fey who had moved around the desk on her side. “Let’s go, Brother…†she said lightly as she moved past and toward the door that the guard was now opening.

Fey would look to Vel with a slight frown and then would lean on his desk in front of the chair that Kayt had just vacated. Katy left the room without even looking back, knowing Vel would catch up with her down the hall or in the common room.

"Well sister. I am going to see a man about a crossbow. We should depart soon I think. I am egre for the hunt." He laughed and walked away, heading back into the town.

((Want to fast forward a bit?))

((Tell you what, post what preparation you want for the mission, then we'll resume whilst they're on their way.))

Kayt gave Vel a curious look at his comment and then only nodded before he walked away. Left alone in the common room her eyes traveled across the room to the empty round table. Most of the chairs usually occupants on a doomed mission, while a few she had learned were already dead, and one was keeping her distance from the Guild Master. Kayt turned away from looking at the table, and lowered her head a bit just in case anyone was looking her way. Fey’s supply room held nothing that interested her or was up to her standards. So she too left the guild and went back to the Inn.

Once in her room she moved immediately to get her things together. First everything was thrown haphazardly on the bed and she changed into something suitable for traveling. A pack was pulled down from a shelf in the closet and when she tossed it on the bed a soft clink of metal was made. From the pouch that was in the nightstand draw she pulled a long two-chained amulet and put it on. She pulled her hair back into a bun and held it up with two pointed decorate metal sticks. Once she was ready, hiding the necklace under her top, she stuffed everything else into the pack that she thought she might need. It wasn’t much; she didn’t need much to do her job.

The things she didn’t take she threw back into a drawer and then threw the pack over a shoulder and headed down stairs. She caught the Inn keeper and told him she’d be back in a few days. He knew to hold her room and Vel’s until such time as Fey told him they no longer needed the rooms. This done she went to find her brother.

(Sorry took so very long!)

They set out immediately, each upon the mounts they had ridden to the town on. Vel could have sworn he spotted Megros in the town, but that rodent had a habit of getting to just about anywhere. Vel was wearing a dark brown cloak, with a set of leather armour underneath. He had not bothered to bring his swords. They would only be extra weight, and what did it matter if the dead saw his gift. A light crossbow of dwarven design hung from his saddle, and a quiver of bolts was strapped to his belt. Kayt's sword was wrapped in a black cloth and rested safely in his saddlebag.

The ride was uneventful, and Vel remained fairly quiet throughout. They stopped beside a small ford, ten minutes ride from where Fey had indicated the mercenaries were to be found. The sun was just starting to dip towards the horizon. In two hours it would be gone.

"Well then. Our first mission. I will remain here whilst you do your work. One hour after sunset I will follow. Do you think that will be enough time for you to provide me with a way in?"

Kayt had never really enjoyed wearing armor of any sort. Then again she hated dressing up as well. The cloak she wore was of a dark green color, she rode with the hood pulled up. It was just as well that he was quiet she did not attempt to encourage any conversation and would only answer him if he asked a direct question. Vel had her sword but she carried on her a short sword and a dagger.

While they rode she thought of the mission they were on and how she would carry out her part of it. When he came to a stop at the ford she came to a stop beside him and dismounted her horse as he spoke. Pushing the hood of her cloak back she gave him a smirk at his question but she nodded. Holding the reins of the horse she moved to him and handed him the reins. “See you soon, brother,” she says.

Vel took the reigns from her, and then nodded. "Soon, yes."

When Kayt reached the stronghold, she would find a walled structure. A stone tower surrounded by a wooden pallisade, with a large gate at the end of a bridge over a deep ditch, and another door, smaller and with no bridge to aid passage across the ditch. The large door is manned by four guards, two on the bridge, and two upon a wooden battlement above.

Each guard was well armed, and armoured. The gate would be hard for the two of them to take by force, so this plan would be needed.

Without making it obvious to those that might be watching her or walking by she took a survey of the stronghold. She knew immediately this would be no easy task, of course, nothing she ever decide was easy. If it wasn’t a challenge she would have found the job beneath her skills, even if know she would still be forced to do it, either by Fey being under cover or by Vel and their masters.

She moved with purpose now toward the bridge and its guards, studying each guard and his weapons without much more than a quick glance. She knew they would stop her, however, she hoped the direct route would pay off this time like it has in the past. Since Fey or Vel didn’t give her much time for scouting to learn if there was some other way to get in, like she and Vel had done with Silent Dead.
