Public Opinion on Moderator discussion

I happened to notice the staff forum thread about Charmed's extreme talents over at the chronicles.

I think it's fine where it is, and it certainly isn't bothering me at all.
I think her works of art are spectackular and wonderfully pleasing to the eyes.

But if she is wanting to have a sub-forum for it, then she's got my support 100 percent.

I'll still visit her.

But I wouldn't say that the chronicles forum is quiet.
It's actually anything but quiet with all the constant stories, songs and poetry popping up.

I'm debating with myself about how I feel about this post.

On the one hand, I tell myself that Ullery is a part of the community and has a right to his opinion as much as anyone.

Then I counter my argument by saying that he put his opinion out about something he wasn't asked about. The debate was taking place among the moderators. We were covering all points. And the debate was happening in the moderator forum. So that seems to indicate we weren't asking for the public opinion.

Thats the problem with having a visible mod forum. I don't know if I think this sort of thread is appropriate or not.

Do we invite public opinion at any time, or do we want them to be silent obvservers, until we open the floor to public debate?

Always asking the tough questions huh ? It entertains me that Ullery asked this very same question back on the temp boards. Well at least a variation of it that with a little refinement would have become this question.

The reason the staff section was and shall be visible to the people was simply so the community would have oversight! In the past often enough things were discussed without the communities knowledge and often I thought that the community deserved to know what was happening., I have had all I could take of the Iron Curtain bullshit we had previously and I felt it a good idea to allow the users to see what ever the community admins/moderators are discussing. As for the blocked posting in that section its to keep it tidy from anything other than the business that needs to be worked on by the staff like problem members when we get a few, Technical problems with their powers and other such. As for input on any topic found in the staff section the best place to ask or give said information would be in the support section, or a directed email, board Pm, or Instant message to a moderator, or Admin.

So in essence yes we want public opinion and debate on what we are discussing. If the matter affects the community the community should have the right to speak of their concerns about what we are doing. We in turn must listen to those concerns and take them into consideration.

Ps. Although Ullery posted it in the wrong area I say we leave his post where it is, as the issue he asked about has been handled. Beyond that I would hardly expect anyone to remember what I wrote five months ago with any form of clearity when no one can view the posts on the temp board with any ease.

Question 1. Where do you want public opinion posts to be posted, if not in the Peanut Gallery?

which leads to...

Question 2. Why have we cut off the public from posting here, if they have free reign to comment on anything we are discussing? It seems to me that if we aren't requesting them to be silent observers, then preventing them from posting here is pointless. They should have permission to post to this forum so we keep all discussion of a particular topic in one location.

I've always thought that the mods/admins of a forum need a place behind closed doors to discuss the running of that forum. Sometimes you need to discuss a member or issue without the membership knowing.

((BTW is the mod action archive visible publically too?))

I think SJ's suggestion could work, but at the same time the current approach of asking for member comments on certain subjects, in another forum.

I agree with Lowthor on the closed door thing. While most things we speak of should be seen by the public posters, some things should not be, it there a way to make some topic's none veiwable?

Sj to your first question :
As for input on any topic found in the staff section the best place to ask or give said information would be in the support section, or a directed email, board Pm, or Instant message to a moderator, or Admin.

To your second question:
As for the blocked posting in that section its to keep it tidy from anything other than the business that needs to be worked on by the staff like problem members when we get a few, Technical problems with their powers and other such.

To continue on that point assuming we had shall we say a pair of trouble makers and they continued to flame and post rubbish in here in every topic, it would be more of a hassle than is needed. That is why I mentioned the support forum for where people could direct post/arguments towards our current discussions.

Lowthor, This is the first time I think I have disagreed with you entirely. It is my opinion that all issues that concern the community should be able to be seen by the members. Now a case was made well for the Mod Action Archive which stated something along the lines of moving something that explained how to hack accounts in there allowing people to view that would be a mistake of epic proportions.

Back to the invisible wall idea, for the Staff forum, while some may be uncomfortable to voice their concerns or issues with problem posters in the open which I believe is the main issue Lowthor and Madi are speaking about. It seems to me to be a way to let people know they are in hot water, and permits them the option of working out the issue via pm/publicly, or private medium.

Now Madi you asked if there is a way to make a post invisible to the standard member in here, and honestly I am not sure if there is a specific way or not. To know we need to call on Ceros, for he would know.

*cuts off ceros' face, and puts it over his own*

Currently, the only thing we have that will do that is the Moderator Queue.

I'm not sure if you have access to this or not... but if you do, you should see at the top of the page a drop-down menu called Thread Tools. One of the options is to Edit Thread. In there, you can uncheck 'visible' and send the thread to the Moderator Queue.

Ok, here's what we need to do.

We need a private forum where moderators can discuss things behind closed doors.

We need a public forum where moderators and the public can post reply, debate, and everything else, all in plain view.

Finally, we need to be strict about only letting topics that are truly sensitive be discussed behind closed doors. The rest must be discussed openly.

I suggest making this forum private, and set it so only Admins can create new topics, but moderators can reply to any existing topic freely. If a mod wants a new topic to be created there, s/he sends a request via PM to the admin. The admin will then either make the topic, or tell the mod to post it to the new Support Forum.
We move whatever threads we currently have here to the Support Forum. Turn the Support Forum into our public admin area, where we discuss things and the community has free reign to talk and add their opinion and whatever else.
Make sure that the new Support Forum is free of silliness and games. Maybe even come up with some stricter guidelines for behavior in that forum, like limiting how long a debate can go before it has to be closed until later or action taken by the mods. Thats up for debate though.

Had to read that a few times to understand it, probably because I'm working on few hours of sleep, but it sounds workable
