From the Ashes

" there is a natural hot spring near by. The heat of the spring kills whatever bacteria lives within the water, so although the water is rather warm, its probably the cleanest within several kilometers." he said matter-of-factually as he completed his preparations and lead them out of the ruined temple.
Once outside, Kel'han winced at the brightness of the moon and pulled the cowl of his black traveling cloak over his ebony features. " It will be quite some time before my eyes adjust to the surface once again." he said more to himself but loud enough so that his new companion could hear him.
The night was rather quiet. He could hear the subtle movements of small forest dwelling creatures, the occasional hoot or screech of an owl, the skittering of creatures on the bottom of the natural food chain, and somewhere way off in the distance, the drow could hear the call of a wolf. He moved silently through the forest, picking out clear places to step, not wanting the larger inhabitants of these enchanted woods to be alerted to his presence.
It was only a few hours later when the sound of constantly running water could be heard. Kel'han crouched low as his abnormal pale white eyes pierced through the darkness into a small clearing ahead of them. " Seems safe enough" he flashed back to her in the secret hand code of the drow. Once again he was surprised that the intricate patterns came to him without any trouble at all. He grinned to himself and slowly made his way through the last few yards of thicket before stepping out into the clearing. He rose to his full height and and casually made his way toward the stream.

The faint sound of running water teased her ears but remained unseen for several hours as she moved down the trail that had indeed turned into a true path, but by the looks of it, a very old path light by white stones reflecting in the moonlight. Now the path bordered a small stream that was growing wider with each twist and turn. The stream turned to river that was too wide to jump and yet not deep enough for her to take a much wanted dip.

Pausing once as she heard the far off sound of a lone wolf, she fought the crazy urge to let loose her own howl, fearful only of what beasts may lay sleeping in the deep woods around the path. With a soft huff if air to blow a stray strand of hair from her sight she continued to follow the twisting path and it’s companion stream tell at last the nights long journey seemed to paying off…The path widened into a clearing….The river flowed into good sized basin.

With a loud cry of utter delight, Jewel lowered her pack to the ground and with out bothering to drop weapons or clothing she dashed for the water and plunged under. Expecting an icy chill, she surfaced with a strange look upon her face…” Warm…Nearly hot enough to call a true bath….The Gods have smiled!!!! ….With this said she dove under once move, surfacing to float lazily upon her back, eyes gazing half closed and mirroring the night sky’s bright stars. Her only movements where a soft rotation of her arms to keep her afloat and the occasional turning of her head to fill her mouth with water, only to turn her face skyward and spit water from her lips like some plaster water fountain adornment

After filling his water skins with the fresh and warm waters of the spring, Kel'han stood and tied them off around his belt. " This should be enough for now." he said while looking over to his companion. He took a moment then to survey the surrounding area and had to admit to himself that the surface world did in fact have a particular beauty to it. It just took until this very moment to stop and actually look. So much of his life had been spent in constant conflict, whether it be an actual war or individual fights. He strove to prove his prowess over others. For the first time in his life he was actually trying to be...something different...at least for now.
Long pointed ears twitched as a sudden splashing sound erupted from the east. Kel'han looked over to his companion and flashed a few hand gestures her way telling her to stay here. As silent as a shadow, the drow tore off into the tree line. with relative ease, the agile creature of the underdark leaped upward onto the branch of a low lying furrburry tree. He didn't hesitate, with great speed and silence, the dark elf rushed down the length of the thick branch. As he neared the end of it's length he coiled back and jumped high into the air, spinning his body over a low branch and falling into a crouching position on yet another perch high within another tree.
He continued his acrobatic display through the canopy of the forest until finialy the source of the disturbance came into view. He crouched once again and peered through the thick foliage into the basin.
What was this? Apparently this creature wasn't aware of the dangers that lie within places such as this. How could one be so careless? His head tilted as h studied the silly creature enjoying a swim in the middle of the night with all sorts of dangerous creatures about...hunting. He studied her for a little while longer and made up his mind that he would investigate. Without making a single sound the nimble dark elf dropped from his perch and as he landed fell into a quiet roll. He stood and after dusting himself off he walked from the tree line out into the clearing. " One should be careful in such places M'lady. It would be quite a shame to give your life up because a midnight swim seemed the best course of the hour." he grinned as he folded his arms over his chest. His cowl was pulled low over his face and the darkness of the area helped to conceal his identity as Drow.

Jewel had always had a highly unusual sense of smell, her friends had often teased her about it, and they had even jokingly called her part bloodhound. But her sense of smell had done her no good this time, for she had been too entranced with the warm waters gentle flow and caress to notice the hooded figure tell he spoke. Her heart did a double time thump inside its cage of flesh and bone as her feet sunk to the sand beneath the water, her body came upright, one hand going to the blade attached to her side, the other clasped a faint stone that glowed and seemed to pulse with her hearts rapid beat that hung by a tether round her slender neck.

Use the stone or face the hooded figure? Wild thoughts raced through her mind yet her face remained calm in appearance. The stone was for emergencies, she wasn’t sure she liked its gifts and it didn’t always work like she willed it to… There didn’t seem to be a reason yet to draw upon her blade with out just cause, for if the hooded figure meant to cause immediate harm, he could have simply attacked her before she had been aware of him…Might as well find out what his intentions where before she chanced it and over reacted.

She offered a faint, but slightly amused grin and cleared her throat of any remaining water before speaking aloud…
“Tis not so much the beasties in the night that I fear, but more that I may never have gotten clean again had I not found this warm pool. …Besides…”
She paused and sniffed the air…
” The closest beastie capable of real harm is about 2 miles to the south, far enough from here for me to feel safe…. However there is another being not so far, but her scent is slightly woven with yours….”
She gazed at his hooded form and flexed her fingers around her blades hilt before speaking again…
“Are you Friend or Foe ?”

" That depends on your definition of friend or foe M'lady. " he said with a slight grin sweeping across his ebony features. Her aggressive motions toward her blade would have normally cause Kel'han to move, but he stayed his blade and merely watched the female. " I wasn't speaking of wild beasts. There are all sorts of creatures hiding within the shadows, some more attune to them than others." as he spoke his right hand reached up and pulled back the cowl of his cloak, revealing his Drow heritage. Long white hair fell down low over his back, a single braid held together by tiny bones hung over his shoulder and down his chest. White eyes glowing with the reflection of the nearly full moon. " I can tell you however, that if i were your foe you would have never known that i was here, and your confusion would be complete when you sat before which ever god you worship. " he paused letting the works seep in. He bowed low, sweeping his right arm out to the side. " I am Kel'han Sargithlin , Disciple of the war god Vallen, former leader of the 7th legion guild. I dwell not within this forest. I merely mean to pass through to find answers. "

Arching a small dark brow as he spoke she felt no malice in his tone, so she allowed her hand to stray from the blades hilt to twist the water from her hair. As he drew back the hood her black eyes reflected his image, but her face showed only intrigue at what being stood before her. She had of course heard of the Drow, but had never seen one in person. For a moment she just stared , then she spoke in a rather flat matter of fact tone.

“The other lesser hunters of this forest section know it wise to leave prey they may not touch alone” …She spoke these words as she stepped slowly towards the shore….” But your right, I should have been paying more attention for I have no rush to meet my maker and a trek to complete”…
With this said her left hands fingers brushed the pulsing stone vanishing to leave droplets of water to fall to the waters surface where she once stood. With no more time then it takes to blink she materialized and stood upon the shore a few feet from him with a some what serious look upon her features, but her body in a relaxed stance.
“I am Jewel…Daughter of Nial…Child of Night….Pleasure to meet you Kel'han Sargithlin , Disciple of the War God Vallen, former leader of the 7th Legion Guild…..”

Staying when commanded was never her strong suit. Her instincts led her to investigate from a safe distance, or at least a distance she called safe. Her eyes, amber in hue, glowing softly within the deep shadows of the tall trees, examined the area around here. There was a serene beauty about this place, and it seemed starkly and rudely invaded by the two beings talking. This could easily be a place to be treasured and enjoyed in its full splendor with the running water and the green foliage. After a moment her eyes drifted to watch the two beings. She knew that his eyes were good enough to see her white dress and hair, but she was not certain about the woman. She wanted to use her abilities, yet she did not feel it was really necessary. Kel'han had offered his protection, at least for the moment, and he didn't seem the kind to renege on a 'battle' promise. She did not know of this god he spoke of or the 7th legion guild. Perhaps these would be questions for another time. She herself had no god to follow, nor did she seek one. They were a nuisance that made her life more irritable than it needed to be. Making deals, bowing, scraping, groveling. She nearly spat with the concept. She thought about her name then, the fogginess of her mind threatening to descend once more. Liriel.. that was her name. Of the house Baenre. She looked at Kel'han, then slowly around the forest. Her house was one of the most feared, envied and hated houses in the whole of Underdark society. And she was the daughter of perhaps the only respected male in that society. She thought intently about whether or not to reveal this information, and she wisely decided not to. She remained in her hidden location for the time being, just being observant of the two. There was no need for her to be revealed just yet. She new it was inevitable, naturally. Truth be told, she just didn't care about this woman, nor did she care to be polite and show herself. She was more interested in finding her own answers and recovering her strength, than trying to be diplomatic with some stranger.

-It's sweet that you don't think of me as a beastie, any more. You were right about one thing, though, Jewel. That one is not alone.- The voice of the mystic wolf sounded in the mind of his quasi-companion. -There is a female not far off. She seems rather harmless, for the time being.-

The monsterous canine known as Der never was one to leave well enough alone. He had spontaneously popped up from time to time, injecting his own bit of influence into situations Jewel found herself, whether it was needed or not. He guessed, by now, she had grown used to his sudden appearances, though at the moment it was only his "voice" that betrayed his presence. He blended in perfectly with the landscape, a finely honed ability he found quite useful on more than one occasion.

He watched everything unfold, for now. He much preferred to be the surprise visitor, and took pride in his ability to detect the presence of others. Even now he knew something else was nearby, though it seemed reluctant to make any sort of appearance.

While awaiting Kel’han’s next words she kept her relaxed posture, even when she heard the voice sound in her mind. While outwardly her facial expression did not change, inwardly she gave a soft laugh and mentaly smiled at the voice, knowing right away who owned it.

“Ahh, Der! I should have known you wouldn’t be to far away. And no, not a Beastie in my book, just a furball *She chuckled softy* Have you been watching these two or did you just arrive?

She now knew if there was trouble brewing that she would not be battling it alone. Der had always made himself useful in the past and she had to admit she may even owe him a favor or two after all this time. Though he also had a bad habit of just popping up and disappearing, not to mention the occasional intrusion into her thoughts, all in all Der was a good one to have at your back.

Because the two were communicating mentally, it was much faster than standard dialogue. In the same time it would take to react normally, several messages could be communicated mentally, particularly since, after a while, the communication didn't actually need to be done with words, but could be expressed through images and emotion.

In reaction to Jewel's words, the mystic wolf chuckled to himself. -Just a furball, huh? Fair enough, I guess. And to answer your question, I've been here long enough to know that you may need some help if things get to that point. I'll stay here, for now, and watch. Why give up the element of surprise?

She gave another soft mental laugh before replying to the "just a furball " part of his words.

“Ok, so you’re not just Any Ole Furball…”

The rest of his statement gave her a sense of uneasiness at the thought of trouble erupting, but was balanced out by the knowledge that she wasn’t going to have to deal with the 2 unknown beings alone.

“Thanks for the backup just incase….I’m wondering if there is a specific reason the female is remaining hidden while he shows himself….All I’m getting from her is the smell of her scent, his scent and a whole lot of mortar dust…Perhaps even tomb dust…Any burial grounds near by that you know of Der ?”

Kel'han began to respond but went silent just as soon as he opened his mouth to speak. His mind suddenly assaulted by a very familiar, and dominating voice. " My son. Waste not thine time on such trivial matters. You've far to travel to find thine answers and time is of the essence." kel'han instantly prostrated himself and lowered his head. " Yes my master." he replied mentally. Without saying another word kel'han gave not even a glance toward the female as he turned and walked away. His companion would have to fend for herself for the time being for his duties to his God were more important than anything mortal creatures could offer him. So...he headed toward the kingdom he vaguely remembered to the north...alone. His thoughts were inward as he made his way through the rough terrain of the forest. What glories would his master find in the north? He shook his head at the thought. It was not for him to concern himself in the affairs of a God, only follow and serve his master without hesitation.

Der watched as the strange elven creature suddenly moved on without so much as a word. The mystic wolf then slowly began to move out of his hiding spot as Kel'Han continued onward.

-No. None terribly close. There is one a couple days travel from here, but I have never seen any mortal creature take such a hike directly from a burial ground. Then again, there is nothing saying this being is a mortal creature. Certainly not an ordinary one, anyway.-

Der sniffed at the air as Kel'han departed, then looked to his long-time friend. Perhaps it would be best if we left this one alone. I doubt his female companion is going to do much, particularly now that I am in the open.- And Der was a very intimidating sight. Metallic black fur with a silvery mane with edges sharper than any razor, and standing nearly nine feet tall at the shoulders. Plus his experiences in the past as a familiar for some very powerful creatures left even more underneath the surface that could not be detected.

-What do you think?-

Her brows furrowed as she watched the being turn and simply walk away with out a word. Her eyes trailed his passage tell he was no longer in view before turning to look at her friend.

“I think your right in some things, as always…Though I have never laid eyes upon one outside books, I think he is a Dark Elf of sorts…As for the female, her scent mingles to much with his for me to know if she is of the same linage…He left with out fight or words, so what ever draws him must strong, perhaps she will follow him in what ever that quest is…If not…*She lifted a small brow and gave a soft shrug of her shoulders*..It is none of our affair less she wishes us danger or wants out help..”

With this said she took the remaining steps to stand before him and reached a hand out to stroke the fur below his chin. She spoke with a smile in her tone.

“So Der…Did you follow me or did you just run across my path once again?”

Der smiled as much as he could and leaned into her touch as she stroked his chin. "Perhaps a little bit of both. Any more my life seems particularly monotonous without the excitement I seem to gain from your company. I tend to wander away from my assigned route. Dektr and his siblings are more than capable of guarding the entrance to the Myst Realm without my assistance. You, on the other hand, seem to need my protection much more often."

Creature species: Lathnaq

Origin: The existence that was before this own

Alignment: Evil

Intelligence: A highly developed brain the can process information ten times faster then the average being. It is also a highly intelligent and experienced predator.

Size: The size of an average house-cat

Appearance:
Covered with what appears to be black fur,

Its face almost resembles a humanoid’s face but with no apparent nose.

It has two sets of ears, one cat like in appearance, and another as a tiny slit on each side of its head an inch below its main ears.

Its hind legs are in the shape and form of predatory animal’s hind legs. Each foot has four toes.

Its forelegs have upon their ends what appear to be tiny hands capable of grasping, each with five fingers. Upon each finger are longer nails that resemble tiny talons. Each talon is approximately one and half inches in length.

Its mouth appears humanoid in resemblance and is filled with dual rows of sharp teeth. Each tooth resembles a shark tooth. It also has two folding fangs located on the top jaw of its mouth. Each fang is two inches in length.

It has a tiny slit that can open and close at will located a half-inch below each eye. These are similar to a pit viper’s pits.

Its eyes are pure black orbs with no visible iris.

Lathnaq specs:
The Lathnaq’s body is composed mostly of a bio-metallic material. Its nails, talons, teeth, fangs, muscles, and bones are all of this strong material that is natural to the creature. The material is very durable. The solid composition of its nails, teeth, and bones are virtually indestructible by normal means. This material is what gives its nails, talons, teeth, and fangs the ability to pierce through most known metals. Its teeth and talons also have a sharpness that allows them to slice through most known metals.

The creature is also double jointed throughout most of its body, giving it an uncanny flexibility.
The Lathnaq is a very fast and agile creature, able to move at speeds that would make it seem as a black blur to the average creature.

It is able to jump at least forty-feet into the air in any direction with precise accuracy.

The creature’s fangs are hollow tubes which are connected to venom sacs that release a neurotoxin into its victims. It can only release two venom filled bites in four hours till the venom is replenished.

To help save its precious fang venom, the Lathnaq’s saliva is brew of bacteria, most of them septic. Some of the bacteria is from the creature’s home existence while the rest was acquired within this existence. The saliva also contains anti-coagulants to prevent wound closure and healing through normal means. Saliva of this nature can be found within a known creature, the Komodo Dragon. To a normal being, a bite can result in death within hours due to intense infection, blood loss, and flesh degradation due to enhanced rotting of dead tissue. Also do to the high concentration of various bacteria within the creature’s saliva, the Lathnaq also has a natural immunity to the bacteria it comes into contact with.

Each hair upon the Lathnaq’s body is in actuality tiny needles made from the same bio-metallic material throughout its form. The hair is not indestructible, but carries a sharpness that can cause the hairs to penetrate the strongest leather, but unable to pierce metal. The Lathnaq can release a volley of fur similar to a porcupine’s quills. The creature can raise the hairs along it’s body like a hedgehog, or flatten them along its body to make it look silken and smooth. At the root of each hair is a tiny venom sack that remains with the needle-like hair even when released from the Lathnaq’s body. Upon impact, the tiny sac immediately releases its load of venom into the target. The hair can be broken off, but reversed miniscule barbs at the tip make it hard to pull the tip out which can burrow further into the skin via physical movement. The barbed tips can cause an intense itching irritation.

The venom released upon a strike is only lethal to tiny creatures around the same size and smaller to the Lathnaq, but a huge annoyance to others. The venom causes the nerves in the surrounding area to slowly be dissolved. This upon the victim starts out as a minor itching sensation that is added with the barbed tips irritation. Over the period of a few hours, the itching sensation grows to an intense burning sensation as the nerves are destroyed by the venom. The length of time of the venom’s duration varies upon the being/creature that is under its influence.

The Lathnaq has only one elemental ability of fire. In a heightened state, it can super-heat its body to where it starts to glow red, and whatever it touches can catch fire. With this ability, the Lathnaq has an elemental immunity to fire.

The Lathnaq does not have an elemental weakness to water, it just does not like it and will avoid it when it can.

The creature does have elemental weaknesses to lightning and cold. Lightning can actually melt the creature due to its high composition of bio-metallic nature. It is also because of the Lathnaq’s bio-metallic composition, extreme colds can actually stiffen its body and severely hindering it, but won’t kill it.

The Lathnaq has no magical immunities, nor does it carry any magical defenses or offenses.

Its eyes are able to see upon many different spectrums. It can see normally, also see the very energies that make up everything within existence. These are the same energies that also make up and comprise magic, henceforth the Lathnaq can see magical abilities.

The pits below its eyes are able to pick up varied changes in temperature and heat similar to a pit viper, and their location upon its face allow it to pinpoint directions and distance. These pits are able to sense changes within the magical environment.

The Lathnaq has a tongue that can be up to five feet in length, and is covered in tiny reversed barbs to help grasp and hold onto prey. Its tongue can taste the air for any prey within a twenty mile radius. Its tongue is very strong and flexible, able to strangle a large creature to death if given the chance.

The fur upon its body when flattened can stop the blow from most weapons, while their belly is the weakest part of their flesh and easier to penetrate. Their skull can only be penetrated through the back of their mouth, the pits, eyes, and dual ears where their skull has openings within its structure.

The Lathnaq does not contain a heart, but the fluids within its body are able to circulate through their body via muscle contractions along the veins and arteries.

The creature does not need to breath oxygen making it able to survive in very toxic gas areas and situations. Its body is able to intake and change whatever the surrounding gasses within the air and utilize it through bio-chemistry. If all air is removed from the area, the Lathnaq is able to hold its breath for the duration of a couple hours before suffocation.

Creature background:
The Lathnaqs came through a giant gateway that was created by another creature, a creature of very sinister nature. They were one of many species that crossed from the previous existence in which they thrived to this newer one. The existence which they are from is that of absolute evil, an existence that later ended before the birth of this existence.

The creatures are mostly solitary, but can and will hunt in packs, and are even more dangerous when in a pack.

Due to the creature’s tiny size and unknown nature within this existence, most don’t suspect or feel this creature’s true deadly nature, and it can easily be brushed off as something minor and harmless to a point. It is an aggressive creature that is also very patient.

Those that can feel alignments could easily feel the evil and deadly nature of this creature, but most would find it unassuming.

((That’s it for now))

From within the baseline of the trees near the edge of the water pool, a tiny creature stood still and silent, watching the four closely as it studied them. Unable to understand their language, nor did it care to understand as of yet, it just sat and watched. If one looked in its direction, they would see nothing as it blended in with the darkness. Its presence would only feel that of a small animal. The Lathnaq watched as two of the creatures parted while another stepped forth and joined a smaller one. It saw within the winding threads of energy that the bigger one was very strong and had a powerful ability with magic while the smaller one had keen senses as well, and a strong tie to magic that it could see so far, not as strong as the larger creature, but magical abilities as well.

The Lathnaq decided to carefully follow these two, especially the smaller one till the opportune time revealed itself to strike. Its hunger can wait, right now it needed to be patient.

"you need food and clean water" he said plainly. Her weakness clearly set the drow back a bit. He had come up among powerful priestesses of the spider queen and new all to well how malicious and dangerous they were. Now though, to see a female in such a pathetic condition, he didn't exactly know how to feel. One one hand he reveled in her pain. It was pleasing to see a female drow in such bad sorts. On the other, she was no priestess. Just another outcast much like himself and that arose something new inside the dark elf...sympathy. " I will return shortly" He said as he turned from her and headed out of the ruins.
Night had come. This was the time of the drow. Like a shadow, Kel'han made no sound as he disappeared into the forest. The hunt was on.

(( oops. been so long that i forgot where i left off, so i posted that in response to the last post on the first page. ugh.. my bad))

Time passed without notice. His mind focused on the task at hand. His God had spoken to him, his words simple and direct. He knew what had to be done. He grinned to himself as he passed out of the tree line and walked into a wide expanse of wild grasses, and small shrubs. The sun had rose and set several times since he began his journey so now, as the sun began to rise once again, his eyes had adjusted as well as a drow's eyes could with the large ball of fire burning in the sky above him.
As he crested a large hill he could see smoke rising from a nearby village where they set their fields ablaze to get ready for some new season. Kel'han reached back and pullsed his traveling pack from over his shoulder and began to rummage through it. It was clear that he needed some simple supplies if he were to continue on his trek. After slinging the bag over his shoulder he scanned the area. Seeing a rather large rock jutting out of the ground he nodded to himself and made his way to it. He would wait till night fall., the time of the drow before he made his move.
