Due to some interesting advertising, I need to inform you (those who live in the states and are citizens, since this only applies to you) about the free credit report issue.

Experian, who is the whore of all credit bureaus has created a very clever advertisement for a website called http://www.freecreditreport.com. They state that the report is free. It's not. You have to pay for an enrollment into their triple advantage club. This is basically a way for them to make you pay $30 to get all three bureaus and all three scores.

An important notation to make here is that every credit bureau uses a different system to calculate your score. Therefore when you go through a 3 in 1 site vs what a lender pulls, the scores will be different. If you go through freecreditreport.com vs truecredit.com (experian's 3 in 1 vs Trans Union's) guess what...the score will be different. In my years of dealing with credit, Experian is the hardest to deal with and typically gives you the crappiest score.

The closest site I've found to get all three bureaus and all three scores for $14.95 is http://www.truecredit.com. It's run through TransUnion and is the closest to a lender's true score that I've ever seen. They provide you with unlimited access and unlimited score update capabilities at no extra charge (and no I don't get referral fees. When you find something you like, you let everyone know.)

Yes there is a free credit report given to each person over the age of 18 who is a US citizen. This report is offered every 12 months (to the exact date) and does not include the credit score. You will have to access each bureau individually for your history and if you print out the report be prepared to have a stack of paper ready. Also be sure to have full account numbers of accounts that you've had in the past in order to validate your identity. If your id has been stolen, this can be a very very very impossible site to use. Just prewarning you. The site is http://www.annualcreditreport.com.

Since I am THE Credit Expert of Southern Utah, I am available to answer questions/give advice/sling mud/etc. Let me know if you have any questions.

Oh, in addition, a lot of you might see a dramatic decrease in your scores after September. Fair Isaac is no longer going to factor into the report Authorized User accounts. Check your report, if you see one stating (AU, Auth. User, Authorized User) then after September you will no longer be benefiting from that trade line. If you have (Ind., Individual, Joint, Etc.) You're fine.
