Well, while my computer is far from giving up the ghost (short of the motherboard chip fan being a pain in the ass at times), I'm wanting to move to a new computer.

Since I'm a big proponent against pre-built computers, I hit the best place to find parts, Newegg, and built me a list. Unfortunately, I'm not extremely hardware savvy, so I'm not 100% sure how well what I've picked will work out together. Or really if they'll work together.

But with the magic of public wish lists, I can make it available, and anyone who can tell me what I picked wrong can point that out. It is somewhat more likely, as this list was made months ago, then had to be updated as Newegg removed items from their inventory (while keeping what was left on the list).

I mostly want to know of any mismatches in the hardware, if anyone knows as much about them.

Whoever takes time out to look into it, thanks.

Oh, and before it comes up, there are no hard drives on the list as I already have hard drives on hand. Two Seagate Barricuda SATA drives (one 80GB, one 320GB).

Ok,I looked over the list and for the most part everything looks copasetic, the only real glitch I see with it is the IDE connections, the Motherboard has one IDE connector, and 7 Serial ATA connectors. So I would look towards alternatives of the DVD drives that are SATA based. This is only because you mentioned one of your hard drives is a Seagate Baracuda 80 gig which I believe were all IDE based drives.

Which would be putting three IDE drives on one cable which I have never seen a three connector IDE cable. There my be IDE to SATA adaptors but I haven't encoutnerd those yet.

Aside from that I am a little worried over the Front side bus speed of the processor, as I don't see it listed by any terminology I am familiar with but it should be alright so long as its under the mother board or equal to the mother boards max fsb.

Well, I linked both of the hard drives I bought (I bought them awhile ago, so I'm surprised they're still on Newegg). I made sure they were SATA when I bought them, but I guess I should've clarified in my post... hell, I barely remembered to come back and say I already had them.

I was considering the DVD drives being SATA too, but when I looked originally, I only saw motherboards with 4 SATA connectors and 2 IDE connectors, which is what the motherboard in my current machine is, and I was planning for more than two hard drives possibly, too. The motherboard I had originally had on my wish list was like that, 4 SATA, 2 IDE, but now that Newegg doesn't offer it anymore, I had to find something else, and I found what I have now.

And taking a look at the "essential" motherboard that is linked to on my processor, the FSB is the same specification as the motherboard I have on my wish list and looking at other vendors that do a bundle with that processor and a motherboard list the motherboard in the bundle as having the same FSB, so I'm going to guess what I have is ok.

It was more the mindset of "the writer is making a copy of the disc in the reader".

Guess it wouldn't hurt to make them both burners, since it'd give a backup just in case one does fail. Almost thought the one in my current rig was breaking recently, but it just needed to be reconnected.

When we were packed 3 to a room, my old room mate, Sgt Lord bought a bunch of parts and assembled them with my help. He also bought a Rosewill power supply. Sadly, it was DOA, so I would recommend you ditch that PS and get one from a more reputable manufacturer. PC Power and Cooling is a good company. I can't stress the importance of having a good power supply enough. They're the source of a lot of tech problems.

I'd advise against going AMD - Intel has had the performance crown for some time now with their Core 2 Duos. I'd recommend an E8400 or E8500. People have had a lot of success over clocking them as high as 4.5ghz using nothing but air cooling. And they're clocked default at 3.0ghz. 3.89ghz with no voltage pushing at all.

Instead of getting an Nvidia 8600 I'd get one like:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814261002

which is the current generation of mid range cards, as opposed to the last generation. Available at the above link for $119 after rebates. Actually, I see you have two of them for an SLI setup. Almost every tech board I've ever been a member of recommends against going with SLI - as usually, for the price, you could get a single card that runs better. Going SLI only results in a 50% (at most) performance increase. I'd just go with something else. If you insist on going SLI, look into doing it with 9600s.

The 8600 has a core clock of 540MHz vs 650MHz with the 9600, and uses GDDR2 instead of the faster GDDR3. It uses a 128-bit memory interface as opposed to a 256-bit interface (like the 9600), is more overclockable, etc. Heh.

http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html Might also help you (also note the Dual Rig charts available) but it doesn't have the 9600 or 9800 on there from NVidia.

Also, I don't see any thermal compounds on there. I'd look into getting a tube of Arctic Silver.

Arctic Silver is recommended by most system builders over generic shit or pads because it results in increased stability and lower temperatures (a couple degrees in some cases). You apply it in between the Heat Sink and Fan and the Processor.

Any questions, hit me up. And I'm still working on that access. Just got back off leave.

Problem is, I don't want to go above how much my current list is, which roughly $1200, and that's before shipping.

I went with AMD because that's what my current rig uses, and I was fine sticking with what I know for my home machine. I don't care to overclock, so I was aiming for something decent from the start.

And, if (well, since, I guess) I'm gonna go with your suggestions, I'm now back to square one, so I'll hit you up if I catch you on an IM client.

Update: Computer's been ordered. Thanks to you all for lending an eye.
