Board Difficulty

Mith, my Husband is having difficulty posting messages. It keeps giving him the error, "Please have at least 1 character when posting" It's been doing that to him for a month. I am able to post so it's not our computer or browser.

Odd. The board software, nor his account, have changed in the last month. There was only one thing done, which was to remove unneeded Javascript on all the pages, which hasn't affected anyone else.

How is he trying to write messages? Through the Quick Reply? From the full message page? Is it private messages too? If he changes his settings from the WYSIWYG editor to the simple editor, does it work?

Well it certainly sounds like it would either be his account specific or something he's using to view the pages. I have experienced something similar on Hotmails new set up but nothing here but DSX is the expert if anyone can hunt down the issue its him.

I checked his message editor interface setting which was set to " Show Enhanced (WYSIWYG) Editor Toolbar "

Xex is set to "Show Standard Editor Toolbar"

I'll change T's setting and have him try to post something and see if it works out. if so it might be a Java issue with your browsers settings.

I try through Quick Reply, and my wife did the same earlier and we both are using the same laptop, and browser.

After doing a test post, it is working for me now. Thanks.

I assume your browser is Opera, due to previous conversations. Did you install anything new into Opera, or upgrade? I know I recommended some potential "NoScript" alternatives to Opera, maybe one of them causes the WYSIWYG editor to no longer work correctly, which is why using the simplified editor works for you.

Doesn't appear browser based... I just tried using it and got the exact same error.

Two versions back, over 4 months difference, there are still no changes in any of the pages that are throwing Javascript errors, which one of them appears to break the WYSIWYG editor. If anyone else is willing to try using it and can report back that it doesn't work, I will disable it entirely.

I can't currently look into the pages on the host, to really do a comparison of all the Javascript files vBulletin uses. I'm trying to get in touch with Ceros about that right now.

I have not reinstalled Opera yet since I had to reformat my laptop due to hardware issues. I'm currently back to my Netscape.

Since Mith fixed my account settings, all is good now. I've been trying to post for the past month, since my last post about the scripting errors. Laterz and thanks again.

Well I am attempting a reply to see if this will fall to the same issue T encountered. However my guess would be something Lapsed between T's browser and Java script somewhere. T you might wanna update Opera if you use it, they released a new one just the other day that did something involving making Java run smoother. As well you should check to make sure your Java is updated as well.

I don't see the problem as limited to just T. I tried on both Firefox 3.6 and Internet Explorer 8 yesterday and both failed.

Also, Java is not Javascript. You don't need anything from Sun installed for Javascript. Javascript implementations are built into the browsers.

Well I do use the WYSIWYG editor, and have thus far not had a problem there in its use. However it is possible that there is something different with Opera 10.5/Opera 10.0 that has a natural immunity to the issue. I cannot say for certain though as I am not well versed in browser-language relations. However hopefully with your digging you can figure it out DSX.

I'll get Flock and Chrome a little later and see if the problem crops up in them. If not I'll test on Firefox, and IE8 myself. Then we can see if perhaps it is a account conflict issue with the way javascript is set up per user tier or something else.

Well, with Chrome, it half works. You can write and post with it, but all the formatting buttons and options do not work (at least, they didn't for me), and it "auto-corrects" your post.

Actually, my Firefox does the same... none of the formatting options work, so I'm thinking Chrome has a slight better handling on passing the text than Firefox and Internet Explorer do. Most likely due to the fact that for the WYSIWYG, it's not a TEXTAREA, but a DIV, and when the FORM tries to POST, the different browsers appear to handle it differently, which means for some it works, for others it doesn't, which should be the case regardless of browser settings or accounts here.

~Hands DSX the medal~ You sir have officially made me look like a twit, congratulations. So in layman's terms the issue is the coding specific, and the way each browser parses and compiles the scripting on the page.

So then the only way to deal with this issue for the time being is to use a browser that somehow pieces all the right parts together or turn off the Wysiwig for posting ?

Pretty much. Weird, it works for some browsers... kinda. When I can, I want to reupload the board software and see if that fixes it, but it'll be a bit before I can do that.

WYSIWYG is now fixed. I've checked the files between what we currently have uploaded and what comes in the version of the board we run and there was a broken Javascript file that referenced Yahoo APIs (YUI), which caused a chain-reaction of Javascript errors.

That file is fixed, those errors are gone, and the WYSIWYG works again.

Actually, this time, it was the lack of using Yahoo that caused a problem. Specifically, the Javascript file that was bad was missing the references to the YUI that made it work.

Either way, Yahoo was involved in a problem.

Either way, Yahoo was involved in a problem.

Deja-vu? Yeah I'd say so.
