The Game is Afoot

Der stood as soon as the mock command was given. -I will be careful. And I'm sure you don't have to be told, but just in case, keep watch until I come back. I don't imagine it will take me very long.-

Der purposely patroled in a large circle around the makeshift campsite until Jex was asleep, then turned to the west and headed into Angelsprite Valley. The trip would not take him long. He was able to reach incredible speeds on the ground, many times that of the average horse. He hoped to be back to Jewel and Jex just before sunrise.

*You know me as well as I know you...See you soon*
Once Jax fell alseep and Der left,Jewel occasionally moving to add fuel to the fire other then that she sat in silence against the log. For now she simply kept watch over the sleeping elf and awaited Der’s return.

The bleeding eye...Jex watched it shimmer each time the sunlight hit it. It almost mesmerized him. He watched as the wizard chanted a curse and then tear his mother apart. The act was less physical than an actual attack, but it was more brutal than even the craziest orc. Jex was silently weeping under the floor. During Jex's dream, he noticed something he had never noticed before. Was it a repressed memory or was it just his imagination? He tried harder to remember, but it was hard. He started to stir, then fell back asleep, softly wimpering. He had to remember, he had to know. Was that wolf always by the wizard's side in his dreams?

The outher patrols of the city, those closer to the woods, were used to seeing Der. Some of them even waved as he passed by. When he neared the more populated area of the city, he was forced to slow. Darkraven was the only kingdom on the continent of Mahl'Oin that had no city or palace walls. It added to the splendor of the kingdom, and made it that much more remarkable that it had never been taken over. Granted, the presence of so many dragons in the mountain range immediately along the western edge of the kingdom had a lot to do with that, as well.

Der slowed to the speed he guessed an average horse would maintain at a trot. When he was finally stopped, he dropped the appropriate names to make his way through the posts as fast as he could. This wasn't by any means the first time he'd been to the city, and the guardsmen were excellent at not acting like they were nervous around a giant talking wolf, but that was truly the only reason they stopped him in the first place. Once he neared the palace, where the higher ranking guardsmen and officials were located, he was stopped less and less.

Finally, Der found himself sitting in the courtyard of the palace, looking over the rest of the city while he awaited the arrival of the king's advisor.

She could tell by the sounds and movements Jex made in his sleep that his dreams where unpleasant. She hoped to ease his slumber so she added a few pinches of a sleeping herb from the pouch attached to her waist to the fire in hopes the sweet smoke would calm the terrors from his dreams.

The wolf is looking right at Jex, it's tongue lolling out of the corner of it's mouth while it's panting. Jex hopes the animal won't give his position away. Suddenly the wolf's head snaps up, toward Jex's Father. A low gutteral growl comes from it's chest, then it leaps at the wood elf. The wizard chuckles and allows his pet to play a moment, then calls the beast back to him. "Enough, my friend. I don't want to kill him. Yet."
Jex is biting his hand, trying not to scream, trying not to call out to his father. Soon the wizard begins torturing the elf, trying to obtain information. Jex passes out just as the wizard ends the wood elf's life.

Jex wakes up and screams. He is remembering more and more lately, and he is not happy. He looks over at Jewel, sees that she is still near, and tries to fall back to sleep. Unfortunately, he will not sleep anymore tonight...

Der was finishing up his conversation with one of the few members of Darkraven who knew Der's true purpose, as guardian of the neutral territory that was the woods to the east. "I'm sorry, Lord Guardian Der, but I know nothing of this wizard, or the crest of which you speak."

"Thank you, Master Bren. I am sorry to have disturbed your evening. If you hear anything more please keep me informed. You know how to find me."

Bren felt the necklace made of Mystic Elf fur and felt it bend to his will. He nodded to Der. "Yes, I do. I'm sorry I couldn't be more help."

"Think nothing of it, Master Bren. Now I must be back to my woods. My charge is still there, but if I am absent for too long, the woods begin to change in less than favorable ways."

Der nodded his goodbye to the Advisor, and headed out of the city, this time traveling full speed. It was already later than he wanted, and he didn't want to think what would happen to the dark elf if the woods took a turn for the worse. Jewel could handle herself. Jex he wasn't sure of.

Jewel had been sitting there with her mind open and her senses flowing around the area in search of danger or Der’s return. She wondered if she should use her gifts to enter his dreams when she felt the horror of Jex’s dreams awaken him abruptly.

Seeing that the herb did not help the poor elf’s sleep, and sensing he now just lay with his eyes closed, Jewel moved to sit by his side. Feeding more twigs into the glowing fire she spoke in a soft voice, one she used often to help others lift the veil of fear from their minds.

“If your dreams are so bad, it is often said that speaking them aloud helps to bring details lost when the dream fades…Details that we might use to find this wizard…I am a very good listener Jex…And very good at unraveling dreams…If you wish to tell me what you dreamt of…Or just to speak of other things to distract yourself from the horror of the dream, I am here to listen…”

Jex listened to Jewel's words, not sure of if he should share. He pondered for a moment then decided that it might not hurt to share what he saw in the dream. He started talking, slowly at first, then let everything out. He could no longer stop talking. After 120 years of looking for his father's killer, he was finally feeling a little closure. Just as he finished telling Jewel of his dream, a sound in the bushes behind him made him start. He turned quickly, just in time to dive out of the way of a goblin's axe. He drew his claymore and hefted the blade toward the goblin's exposed neck. The goblin was too busy trying to remove his axe from the log, so was unaware that his head was about to be looking up at the rest of him. The heavy sword cut cleanly through the soft neck of the goblin, not even slowing as it passed through bone. Jex quickly looked for any other signs of danger, but saw nothing. It seemed to him that his unusually keen sense of danger was oddly off. He looked at Jewel, shocked, and said "I think he was the only one. Must've been just a scavenger."

Der sprinted as fast as he could, knowing he would be tired by the time he reached the woods, but he could not take the risk of what might happen if he were gone from the woods for too long. He could already sense a change in their makeup. It was likely that creatures were starting to spawn from the fallen logs, piles of decaying underbrush, and any other once living thing in the boundary of the woodlands. If that were happening, it also meant that natural abilities of any creature not from the Realm of Myst were being affected. Der had to hurry, or it would get much worse then even he would be able to deal with on his own.

As he neared the edge of the borderland, he could smell the presence of goblin blood on the air. True goblins had been banished from the land just after the continents of Mahl and Oin joined together hundreds of thousands of years ago. This far in, it could only have been spawned.

Der darted into the treeline and immediately sliced through a pair of harpees as they came screeching in a divebomb at him. Soon, he was leaping through the outer ring of trees and bushes surrounding their campsite. He paid no attention to the dead goblin, but instead tramped out the fire and started literally barking orders. The need for discretion was gone. "Jewel, I was gone too long. Prepare yourself. Jex, keep that weapon out and be ready to fight. We will soon be overwhelmed."

Jewel leapt to her feet as the goblin came through the bushes. Her fingers found the twin swords at her side an in and instant they we free from there sheath and twirling in her hands. The beheading was so quickly she had no time to aid the elf nor he did he need it anyways.

She should have felt the goblin long before he was close enough to find them, she should have felt the danger, but something was off, because until Der burst from the bushes barking orders she did not feel the danger. But she did now and she was prepared! Touching the amulet that lay against her throat she murmured a word. In an instant Jewel was rendered invisible, weapons and all, the only sign of her being was a flicker of two unnatural dark liquid orbs that flickered in and out of sight, and even these where hard to see with the naked eye.

“What in 7 hells has happened Der…I felt nothing coming tell the goblin was here…A strong magical veil surrounds these creatures…As if someone wants us stopped before this quest is even truly started!”

Jex stared in disbelief at the talking wolf. He had seen a lot of weird things in his days, but never a talking wolf. He didn't have much time to ponder it, however. He saw Jewel disappear, then heard a shriek from behind him. He spun around, weapon at the ready just in time to see a harpy flying toward him at lightning speed. He hefted the claymore at the beast, but was not able to make a killing strike. He hit the harpy in the arm and cut it deeply, but it was not enough to kill. The harpy knocked him down and pinned him, trying desperately to tear Jex apart.

The nearly ten foot tall wolf feared the third harpy from the group may have followed him. He was right. Still, a single false creature was easy enough to deal with, and he called out the word that would dispell the beast. "Kondgos!" There was no shriek that followed, no glorious flashing of light or screaming of magical energies. The harpy simply vanished like the fake thing it was.

Der answered Jewel while he still could. He realized by answering Jewel's question he would create several within Jex's mind, but they both had to know what they were dealing with. "The curse on this place is no simple children's horror tale. It is real. It only remains inactive so long as I am within the enchanted boundary. I was gone too long. The effect on your abilities and the creatures are all a cause of that. Be glad I returned as fast as I did."

Der looked around quickly. "The creatures are not real, but they will do damage. They are amassing around us now. I am their target. The curse wants nothing more than to be rid of me. I cannot dispell groups as simply as I did the one. They can be killed just the same as the beings they are made out to look like."

He looked around one more time. "We have some time before they come. Some of the beasts are coming from farther away. Do not go seeking a fight. We must be sure none remain. Every strike must be lethal. If you don't have a killing blow, don't take it. Better to play cat and mouse until you have one. In a mass attack the result of wounding one will be far worse than being wounded yourself."

Her voice floated out a little to the left of Jex, if he looked hard enough he could spot the dark liquid orbs that served as her sight while in this form.

“Cat and mouse is one game you know I excel at Der… I am ready…Are you ready young Jex? Easier to think of this as a game…A deadly game, but a game none the less.”

Jex did not have time to think about what to do next. "A game. Alright, let's play." Jex was upset that he was injured by the harpy, even more upset when it vanished into thin air. He sheathed his claymore and drew his twin daggers. It was to be a game of speed tonight. He loved his sword, but it was not quick enough, as the harpy had proved. Jex now was ready for anything.
"So, you can talk, Der. When were you going to let me in on that small detail," Jex asked.

"Not as soon as I did." The tone Der used to answer made it obvious that Der was not in the least bit ashamed that he'd been hiding something from the elf. There were many other secrets he and Jewel held, both from Jex as well as from each other.

He didn't have the time to voice this fact. A pulse of energy could be felt by those in touch with the energies of these woods. The creatures had gathered, and they were ready. Jex would have no idea what to expect, and for that Der felt sorry for the little elf.

Der began to shake violently as an audible humm came from his body. Just as he began to do so, the surrounding treeline almost vanished from sight as hundreds of ogres, harpees, minotaurs, gorgons, rocs and every other terrible creature imaginable came pouring out from the woods headed directly for the one being they viewed to be a threat to the magic that spawned their existence...Der.

At first, Der made no movement. But when the beasts came to be within inches of striking range, he opened his eyes and shouted. "Eli Kondgos!" He performed the banishing spell for a group, and the entire group of creatures that was in front of him disappeared just as the harpy before. That still left the rest of the beasts in the opening, but it helped more than a single strike.

“I’m right beside you Jex, but don’t worry about hitting me, just breath and swing for the neck or heart…Your looking for death blows only….”

Jewel stayed beside Jex, figuring the elf would need her help a lot more then Der would, and being unseen was an easier way to strike a death blow at anything that moved to close to the elf. With her blade drawn she stood between Der and Jex, ready for what ever might actually slip past Der.

*They are after you old friend, but they wouldn’t mind a piece of me and our little friend either…You need me, you say so…No bravado mister!!”

Jex didn't have time to panic, nor did he have time to discuss pleasantries with Der. What he did have time to do, however, was fight. He watched Der make the first wave of attackers disappear. Then wave two came. Jex took down several goblins and harpies, not pausing to allow much of a chance to them to strike him first. An ogre came bumbling his way, club raised to the heavens, seeking to crush Jex. He threw his dagger at the clumsy beast, piercing it's heart. He sheathed the remaining dagger, pulled his old friend, the claymore, out and started hacking the imaginary beasts to pieces. Very tired, Jex was starting to have trouble keeping up after wave three of the creatures. He started hoping that this would be over soon.

Jewel was right, the vast majority of the creatures were after him, but the ones who could not easily get to him were just as happy going after Jex. They were programmed by the curse that spawned them to destroy all life. Plants were easily enough dispatched once all the 'animals' had been dealt with. Plants were no threat. Animals could be.

The battle was as horrible as he had feared. Thankfully, though, it was not worse. At least not yet. The orcs and rocs seemed only to go after him, while the other beasts took on anything in their way, be it Jex, or a bush that was simply too close. Der did not have the selection of weapons to fight with that Jex did. He had only the sharp parts of his body. Luckily, unlike any other canine, the mystic wolf had the advent of his mane, to assist him. Plus, since he was the mystically appointed guardian of this forested land, he did not have to follow the same rules he'd put down for Jewel and Jex. Any wound from him, no matter how insignificant, would terminate the false monsters.

The battle raged on. Claws swiped, mane-blades flew and teeth ripped, with seemingly no end in sight. It was when the call of the first basilisk sounded that Der's heart sank a moment. The basilisks would see straight through the veil Jewel hid behind, and their freezing stare and unimaginable speed would make them terrible foes to face. Der knew Jewel and himself could continue on as necessary, but Jex was already tiring. This was obviously a warrior not accustomed to the battles on Atii, one of the most violent worlds in all of Ayenee. He would not last much longer.

As if to verify Der's fears, three basilisks simultaneously emerged from the treeline, and each lunged for a different foe with thunderous speed, stone gaze glaring, mouth agape, fully expecting to take a target one way or the other.

Jewel saw the basilisks as they emerged from the bush, under her breath she muttered a curse and yelled at Jex.

“Don’t look at them in the face, if you can fight with your eyes closed do so!!

Jewel did just that, she had been trailed to fight in the dark by sound and smell alike and these things stunk!
Darting forward both blades out she swung at the neck just below the base of its head and brought her blades together across the flesh in an X. Attempting to detach its head with as quick a stroke as she could. She had no time to look back yet so she hoped that Der and Jex where fairing well enough.
