Nervous!

So, I was going to visit my mare at the trainers today and was in the drive thru at McDonalds. My cell rings and it is my trainer. She left on April 2nd and is ready to come home this weekend after I take my ride.

Well, on Saturday, my trainer is having a trail ride for all his clients. Which is cool, it's a 2 and a half hour ride in the mountains with about 40-50 other horses. He thinks she'll do fine, but sometimes horses tend to get a bit nervous around numbers that large.

So my options are to either go early on saturday, ride her a while, then do the trail ride.. or wait till saturday, go, hop on, ride and bring her home. I really wanna do the trail thing, I think it would be cool. But I also think it'd be better to just go on sunday and then bring her home. I'm SO nervous. lol Honestly, scared! lol I know i'll do fine, but maaaaaaaaaaaan! lol Anyhow, I just needed to share or whatever! lol So yeah... that's my exciting news!

Well, even though trail rides are oh so much fun, I wouldn't do it if you haven't ridden her in a while. I made the mistake of doing that with my horse, T (short for Thunder Storm Extreme or something else completely idiotic the stupid previous owner named him) and he went a little crazy. I guess it was because between school (HS) and stuff, I hadn't ridden him in a while and he was upset with me or something. Just take time to get used to her again and let her get used to you.

I would be very wary about it if you've never ridden her. Long trail rides take a lot out of horses. Most places that do trail rides will not take the same horse out twice if they're taken on a 3 hour or more trail. The 1 hour ones are a different story, but that's neither here nor there.

I would inquire about shorter trail rides first. Give the horse a chance to get acquainted with some of the other horses, and used to you riding it.

As a fellow horse-junkie hee's some advice. If you're nervous, your horse will be as well. She will feel your mood and reciprocate it outwardly. If she's freshly broke then she'll be completely out of control. I wouldn't suggest it for the safety of both of you. I would train with your trainer, get the mare more used to you and social situations before you just slam her into a group. Imagine if you were fresh to public speaking and then I threw you onto a podium with a fifty people listening to you? Scary...intimidating....right? That's how your horse will feel, especially if other people are nervous and scared. As much as you want to go, and as much fun as it would be...I would not recommend it. Remember that if that mare bucks, lunges, runs and gets hurt, then it won't matter how much fun that trail ride could have been. Be prepared first then have the fun later.

I talked to my trainer today and she had gone on this path quite a few times and he feels confident that she'll do fine. She's been with more than a few horses at a time and he says they are all pretty well spread out. So he feels it will be okay. The ride is at 11, so he told me to come at 9 and ride her for an hour in the arena, so we can get use to each other. Under his instruction, so I think it'll be fine. I am a confident rider, and if I get dumped, that only serves to piss me off and I get right back on, hurt or not. Wouldn't be the first time. Anyhow, depends now if my friend can get his horse ready to go with me. I just don't want to do it by myself. I'll know tomorrow if i'm going on trail or just waiting till sunday or monday to go pick her up. Trainer also said it would be beneficial to go on the ride because it would give us 2 and a half solid hours to bond and get use to each other.

Well, good luck with the trail rides and all...I cannot contribute much here due to me being allergic to horses and not able to ride them. However, I wish you the best of luck.
