Buddy List

In User Control Panel there is a buddy list and ignore list. I have added three fellow members to my buddy list. What does it do exactly?

To the best of my knowledge,the buddy list provides an easy way to send private messages to people. I'll check into this more later today and get a detailed answer for you.
