Post-Mission Eleven: R&R, Bar Style

Goodpint Bar, a bar known for affordable drinks and midday brawls. The latter is something Walter Hyde was already aquainted with the latter, having killed a ogre with a couple of grenades just yesterday. It's hard to tell if that will ever come back to haunt him, though Walter had pushed aside those thoughts; they might not end up being relevant, not anytime soon. That aside, Walter couldn't help but wonder why Alastair wanted a drink with him. The white-haired man isn't even an aquaintance to the technician, after all.

"You aren't hiding any surprises, right?" Walter asked with a raised eyebrow. He unbuttoned his orange coat, but otherwise kept it on.

"Depends on what you consider a surprise. Sure being asked out for a drink by someone you hardly know was already enough of a surprise." Alastair replied back as he took a seat. He was wearing simple clothes, nothing to indicate he was of any importance.

Walter soon followed, taking a seat across from the officer. "So... It really wasn't anything nuts. Just you and me, drinking?" The recruit didn't feel relaxed, as he was having trouble processing that unfamiliar idea. It sounded fun to him, at least, but how does one go about something like that?

"You got it, just two crew members hanging out. I feel it is important to get to know one another, but not as an officer. Just two people trying to make it through life." Alastair commented back with a smirk across his face. He was relaxed and seemed to be enjoying the time away from the ship. "So yeah, what did you think about that last mission?

He asked with a curious tone in his voice.

"Well," Walter leaned back in his chair, and crossed his arms, "it was confusing. I thought we literally had to look for pomegranate. It's why I went to Memorial City while everyone else headed west and north."

A waitress arrived at their table and asked the two Minkans what drinks they would like. Walter simply answered "Ale".

"I will take a stout." Alastair said with a smile. He looked back to Walter. "Aye, it was an interesting mission for sure. I got to see Gravity get eaten whole by a tar monster."

The waitress walked off after writing their orders down. "So I heard." Walter said, witholding some knowledge for the time being. "Though what's the whole story about that? I heard people were walking into enchanted forests and tar monster territory, and that was about it."

Walter would say that everyone else was having more fun with this 'mission' than he did, but then again, he didn't know if he really want to be there in the North...

"Welp, we fought a tar monster in one forest and had crew members going down in another. Seems this forest would get you drunk while being in it. Due to issues some members removed the protective mindy helms and got messed up." Alastair shared as he thought for a few more moments. "Also got a report Mark got messed up too. So Mark and Shasse getting fixed up." He paused and moved a little closer to Walter. "This was partly why I called you here. You see I am looking for another I can count on." He said with a smile.

Walter chuckled, and shrugged in his seat. "Now how do you know that? We only met yesterday, and I was one of the people who got transfered into this crew after you guys came."

"Be honest some of it was reported. Some is just my gut feeling about you. Seem like an alright guy who I can trust." Alastair leaned back into his chair more. "So anything you would like to know about me or have you already hacked my record." Alastair said with a chuckle.

"What? No, I don't need to know everything, but... I'm interested in the Kaiyo in general, you know?" Walter answered, flattered by Alastair's modest praise. "You guys just appeared out of nowhere, and that's kinda saying something when you're all the way out here." The Minkan gave the implication that Fort Miller isn't known for being that unique or exciting, despite the fact that interesting phenomenon do happen on occasion that one wouldn't find anywhere else.

"Well how do I explain this. We are here on a good faith mission. Before my time a link between our universes was made and from time to time we come " Alastair took another moment to think more. "So our captain is Hoshi with her second being Eden. They are very good people and do much to help others. I am third in command and work to ensure the crew along with Eden get along well." He finished talking and reached for a drink of water.

Unlike us, where we ended up brute-forcing our way in..., Walter thought. The waitress came back, drinks in one hand and a plate full of food in the other, and dropped the drinks at the table as she hurried over to deliver the food to a hungry customer. "Yeah, we used to work with another ship for status updates, but then there was that two year lull that went on. I heard that those moments only happen in the case that there is some major war going on, so did that wrap up at all?"

"Be honest I am not sure. I joined the ship pretty much just before we took this mission. I hope bad times are not ahead but if we are here there is a good reason for it." He spoke calm and clear as this was the honest truth. He reached for his drink and took a sip. "So what is your story?"

The technician shifted in his seat, weighing the options. He looked between Alastair and the cup of ale, and hesistated to talk. "Well... I... I was sent here four months ago, straight from basic training. Technician things." While it doesn't sound like a lie, the facts Walter Hyde gave just never added up. Everyone knows that Fort Miller is a well-kept secret, so it's impossible for a Santo Hei, fresh from basic training, to be promptly stationed to a secret base in another dimension.

"Uh-huh, is that so. Its alright if you don't want to be straight with me at this very moment. We have just met but don't feel the need to cover. I noticed during the mission you seemed a little distracted by something. Got something...or maybe someone on your mind? The ends of his lips curled as he learned a little closer.

Walter felt the urge to keep the secret hidden, but he didn't- "Wait... Someone? Who, what..? No, I don't have anybody on my mind!" Walter said, dropping the nervous body language in favor of looking confused. He put a hand on the table, and leaned into the table. "I didn't even talk to a girl during the whole mission, and you think I would get wrapped up in all of that 'love at first night' business. What gave you the idea?"

Alastair could not hold back the grin that continued to curl on his face. "Ahhhh, so there is a girl in the picture then." He said with a chuckle. "Think nothing of it, we have some very fine members on the crew so only natural to be at least a little bit interested." The grin slowly faded as he relaxed agained looking at Walter. "So, going to share the who?" He said in a calm almost flirty voice.

Walter Hyde is speechless, and a bit embarrassed from the scrutiny. "I-I'm being honest here, I don't have anyone on my mind! I mean... Maybe that winged girl who is two feet shorter than me, but I was just wondering if she was an Elysian or an angel native to Ayenee." He said, overthinking the question a little bit. "But that was about it; I know nothing about her."

"Ohhhhhh, so the angel got your attention huh. Believe her name is Arete." Alastair again chuckled to himself. "My brother went chasing after his angel not too long ago. Seems they have an arua that make guys fall for them." He laughed as he placed his hands on the table. "I can not promise anything but if a nudge it needed I will be sure to push a little." He gave Walter a wink.

"Arete, huh..." The technician blushed and chuckled. "I guess her hips were alluring, but... I don't know, sir. I barely know everyone here, let alone her." Walter drank some ale, the fluid burning his throat unpleasantly. "I might not even be her type."

Alastair reached over and gave him a pretty hard pat on the back. "Haaaaa, glad I was not the only one to notice those hips. I knew we would find some common ground my friend." He could not help but chuckle and laugh, prompting Walter to blush harder and chuckle with him.

"I guess so..." Walter paused, and added, "... Friend." That word felt odd to say; he was under the impression that friendships were just a petty want for attention-getters, but this felt like fun more than anything else. Walter smiled, and drank some more ale, prompting him to spit it back into the mug.

"Egh, the stuff stings...!" The technician exclaimed, rubbing his throat shortly afterwards. "Is alcohol always this bad?"

"Yup, but it makes people feel important so they suck it up and act like it is the best thing ever." Alastair took a drink with a big smile. "So, I know a few things about you. Let me share a little about me. I came to this ship as a favor to my brother. They happen to be looking for a new 3rd in command and Miko wanted to chase some tail. So I pulled a few strings and got him transfered off and myself put on the rooster."

"You pulled strings? How'd you manage that, sheer reputation?" Walter, although curious, also felt guilty that he couldn't give as much in terms of story compared to Alastair; his story just held more detail than Walters.

"Be honest is seemed a little too easy so sure other things were already in motion. Either way I am here and ready to help out my crew." He said with a smile. "Seems first order of business will be helping you get to know Arete some more. I am sure I can find ways to make this happen." The smile turned into a grin. It was easy to tell Alastair enjoyed playing match maker.

Walter, still blushing, smiled sheepishly. "I really don't know, she might think I'm weird or something. I might not be her type, either." He said, clearly downplaying himself.

"Oh you are fine, if anything just get to know her and be good friends. If it moves past that well that just happen to work out even better." Alastair said with confidence in his voice. "I mean who would not want someone able to fix a starship or duct tape two pipes together. Girl like a man who is able." A wink was given as he finished talking.

"Heheh, yeah, I guess you're right, Alastair, sir." Walter drank from his mug of ale, and finding that the terrible taste is still terrible, he set the mug aside, with the goal in mind to just get some darn water already. He wondered if he could just tell Alastair his secret... Just one nice guy won't hurt. Walter didn't like to hold secrets.

"I... Well, how do you get the courage to do stuff like that? Like, being upfront and honest and all that? I'm not talking romance here, but in general things." Walter asked, instead of coming forth with the truth already. At this rate, the orange-eyed Minkan felt this may not be a good time to be truthful about himself; it's way too weird anyway.

"Well, part of it has come from the fact I am not blood to the Belmonts. I am not going to say I was treated badly but there was this feeling in the air that I could not mess up. The vultures circled looking for the chance to market on weakness." Alastair's voice had taken on a more serious tone. "As such I pushed to always do better and reach the next step before anyone else." His tone had started to become light hearted again. "Now, I still fight the good fight but have come to see there is much to be gained from working on the more social aspects of life."

Walter Hyde found Alastair really admirable, even fitting for the position of third-command and beyond. Admirable enough for Walter to start breaking the ice with him, rather than have the officer do the work. "Yeah, my upbringing and training were about nothing but 'fighting the good fight'. I wanted more than that, but it never happened. That's why... I..." Walter's tone was on the verge of being cold, but then he cleared hs throat, and quickly wrapped it up. "That's why I came here, I guess. It settles my nerves. Ech, sorry, just..." Walter looked around and signalled the waitress.

"Yeah, sorry to be a bother, but I was wondering if I could swap this for a water. Alcohol isn't my thing." The waitress kindly nodded to Walter, and took away his mug of ale to the kitchen. Walter looked back at Alastair with his orange eyes, and chuckled. "Okay, okay, I'm really not that tough for drinks yet; I'll stick to water for now."

Alastair could not help but chuckle. "I was wondering when you would drop the tough guy act. I have to admit its not really your thing if you ask me." He smiled and took another drink. "Fighting the good fight, man that takes me back. Sadly while I try not to be about the fight, I have people to look out for so it is not easy. Enjoy the fact you only have yourself to look out for. Having people under you is not all it is made out to be."

Walter agreed, he didn't feel he was born to be tough or strong. It didn't change he was... conditioned to be like that, to avoid weakness. "No I'm not, but it's kind of hard to... Break that mold, I guess." Walter sighed. "Also, you could just stay up there in third place where you belong; I'm not going to climb that ladder to the top."

"I may just do that, but then again I go where I am called. Like right now, I am here not a your commander but as a friend. And as a good friend and wingman its my responsibility to ensure the road is paved for success." His evil grin showed up on his face again. "I wonder what type of guy Arete likes." His words trailed off as he looked off into the distance.

"Hey there, what happened to being my wingman?!" Walter almost stood up from his seat, but he remained planted there. His face is one of exasperation. "That's the face of a guy getting funny ideas!" He said with a heavy blush, then continued. "... Well, you might also have the right idea, too..."

His chin still looking up, his eyes looked down at Walter. "Ahhhh, got you good." He said with a laugh as his face leveled with Walters. "Only time will tell if something comes of it. Though it seems that all the angels just can't help but have guys fall for them. Even my brother suffered this fate."

The waitress came back around to the table to drop off Walter's water, before rushing off to the kitchen again for more busywork. Walter gripped the cup, felt awkward to talk about someone else like this, and answered. "Actually, how about we have a toast?" The technician gestured to his glass of water. "A toast to fighting... Fighting the good fight. I read that's what friends and partners do at these things."

"A toast to fighting the good fight...and maybe Walter getting lucky." Before Walter could react he clanged his beer glass against his. Despite that, and also the latter bit of Miko's toast, Walter rolled with it like a champ.
