Mission Twelve: Naze Sorairo

YSS Kaiyō II

While the crew had been at Temple of the Stars on Yamatai, the ship they called home had been under repairs and was refit with a Transuniversal Teleportation Drive, along with being painted the stealthiest of colors. The ship retained its central Hinomaru and wouldn't forget the Empire it fought for. Its captain and XO wouldn't forget where they had come from, either. For Teien Eden in the power armor bay, it was painful to have been set forth on a scouting and familiarization mission recently in which some of her crew were devastatingly injured when she had been with the Kaiyō namesake since its beginnings. She felt she couldn't take the damage and death that marred her image of the ship and what it was capable. Taiyou Hoshi, the little captain that now sat in the command chair of the bridge, felt more confidence in her vision of the ship's past performance, though, despite the lack of health and safety generally upheld by the ship's crew. With a gleam in her deep blue eyes, she spoke.

"I want to see everyone to their stations. Remember the briefing—" Hoshi said over ship comms, alluding to the briefing an hour before when they had still been on the planet, Ayenee. She and Eden had told the crew to be at readiness condition one, which meant all members of the crew were to be properly equipped and at their duty stations, within the hour. No questions were allowed, but the crew was told more. Those in engineering were to work with the bridge to use the TTD today, something that had not happened on the Kaiyō save for once; that was when they had come to Ayenee just a few weeks ago. Their mission was not directly stated, but the implication of an enemy in this other universe was made when Hoshi told them to expect resistance and to be armed and ready for further orders. Alastair himself wasn't even privy to more information. The conclusion of the briefing was met with questions that could not be answered yet and the XO and captain asked everyone to find their place on the ship.

Today, they had lifted off of the planet thanks to Gravity, the pilot of the YSS Kaiyō II, and bustled to their positions throughout the ship, with a few exceptions. The ship had traveled to the lip of the system of Ayenee's burning star and then the captain spoke again.

"Helm, engineering, proceed to the coordinates I am sending you," Hoshi's voice chimed as she wirelessly transmitted to the digital minds and devices of those in engineering and the navigation consoles on the bridge. "You will notice we are going to a universe designated 'Sorairo'. There may be enemy signatures immediately. Weapons, wait for my orders. Sensors, I want to know the minute we're detected. The safety and systems monitor needs to tell me how our stealth systems are doing every step that we take."

"Naze Sorairo," Hoshi said in Yamataigo to Eden. Meaning, 'Why is the sky blue?'

That was Eden's cue and in the power armor bay, she looked around at those suited, those suiting up, and looked for those not yet there. She then caught sight of Alastair and nodded to him slowly before looking away, at the crowd of crew and she spoke.

The XO said in a gruff voice, "Suit up as quickly as possible! Check in with me or your Second Officer when you're mission ready."

Mark had made sure to arrive before most of the others, all the while making sure his arm remained wrapped. He was not his usual happy self this day, and he hoped as he mounted his Mindy Solaris, that no one would notice. The only person who might have insight into his condition was the XO, the worried glances since the recon in the fog incident and even before that hinting at a possible encounter prior she had not shared.

As he put oh his helmet sealing the suit, he gave a sigh as he was enclosed in armor and out of sight. The sensations of armor and systems becoming one with him were welcoming, the feel of cold metal under his feet for once a comfort. With all systems green he walked over to his CO, "All systems green, ready for mission go." He said neutrally, the visor hiding his averted eyes, even though he watched through synched optics instead of his own organic eyes.

Arete was arriving more or less just in time, sliding into the armor bay in the rather tight exercise uniform. Despite what what her outfit might imply as to her previous activity, Arete didn't seem at all exhausted, sweaty, or even active. She shivered as her mottled wings slid through the gelled armor interior, fitting snugly into place before her chestpiece folded in to cover the rest of her body. Opting to keep her helmet off for the moment, the angel used her free hand to fold her glasses together, sticking them into her secure butt pack. Assuming it wasn't shot by something its contents should be safe...

"Surinus-Hei, reporting for duty!" Her voice called out firmly through the bay. She knew where Eden was still - it wasn't like the XO was moving unpredictably or anything - but she wouln't be able to clearly see her face until her helmet was back on. The blonde sage smiled nonetheless, since at least like this she wouldn't be, well, truly trapped inside the metal shell of the mindy.

"Roger that, coordinates locked." Gravity replied curtly to her captain. The neko was dressed in a standard work uniform, with her Kaiyo ballcap covering her scalp and her sleeves rolled above the elbows. Her gloves were stuffed in her cargo pockets, and her braid was draped over her right shoulder as she kept a trained eye on the ship's heading and velocity. Thankfully, SPINE took care of most of that for her. It was the closest thing anyone could come to actually "becoming" the ship they were flying. Gravity could feel every minute shift of inertia, feel the steady idle of the ship's massive engines.

She was excited, to say the least. Maybe a little fearful, as this was the first non-simulated combat she would ever partake in at the Fuji's helm. Every single little tidbit of strategy she'd learned moved through her head, even some tricks from fighter school. She stared hungrily at the view-screen, like a tiger starring at its prey, her hands absent-mindedly drumming on her controls.

Miles had made his way to the PA bay as soon as he heard the call to stations hoping he wouldn't be late to the first combat ready assembly since moving to Ayenee, as reminded by Sacre in their previous endeavors he couldn't do the things she could as a combat medic and often wondered if he'd be better off staying on board the ship. His pace slowed as he moved going from the long purposeful strides to almost dragging his feet along the floor, Sacre was more than capable of dealing with the field portion of medical business and with him on the ship he could ensure she was able to return to the field without needing to watch the patients.

Miles had come to a complete stop outside the entrance to the PA bay and paused, the more he thought about it the more it seemed to make sense for him to stay behind. His thoughts swirled and settled as he furiously tried to find a reason to go with the team, he wasn't worried about Shasse he knew she could take care of herself and survive and he was more likely to need saving himself. So he stood, searching for a reason to move through the door before him and not knowing if it really was what he wanted.

Shasse meanwhile happened to be in the bay already looking over her armour for any damage from the tree crash when the call was put through and her ears had perked up and a wide grin split her features, dropping the cloth she had been trying to use to clean off some of the blood she'd missed the first time she hurried to suit up. Being alone in her little corner of the bay with her suit she quickly stripped down and took a few moments to feel the air on her body which she didn't often get to do always arriving and having to suit up straight away, after another moment she clambered into the suit and moved into the center waiting for the others with her helmet under one arm, hair spilling down the back of her suit like a white curtain.

"Shasse here, feeling pumped and ready to go!" In her excitement it came out slightly more casual than she perhaps should have been but she couldn't undo spoken words and so shrugged internally and decided she would deal with whatever the result was, perhaps they wouldn't mind? It hadn't been too long since she had recovered from her injuries and she moved her arm around instinctively wincing expecting to feel the pain of her flesh and bone tearing and grinding but as usual none came and she had to calm her racing mind. Although she had been let out of the medbay not long after her arm was healed she still hadn't found Darwin to thank him for helping her and it was bugging her slightly, "The one time I decide to do something serious and he doesn't have the courtesy to show himself."

"Aye, Chusa!" Kikios called over the comms. She input the coordinates and other data into the machinery, then watched a screen as they prepared for the teleport, eyeing the numbers being outputted to make sure nothing was going wrong. The bird grasped her datapad, having the numbers displayed on it too in case she needed to move.

Chlorate came running to the Power Armor Bay "Chlorate, reporting in," she beeped. She didn't have a suit, so once she arrived she just stood there in her robotic android body.

Walter Hyde arrived just a bit later than the others, seemingly cool and tough on the outside, when in reality was scared out of his mind. Walter already had prior experience with transuniversal transport, a horrible experience. He remembered every detail of the journey from home to Ayenee; the heat of the vessel, the cries of horror, the red lights, Walter could never forget his first journey here. That being said, he heard that the Kaiyo II has a properly functioning TDD, and he could safely assume that the ship didn't break apart midflight , either. That helped reassure him enough to not skip out on the mission, but not enough to settle his nerves.

Given his unique circumstances, Walter had two choices; he could either go to the bridge and assist in the proper run of the TTD, or he could go to the Power Armor Bay and suit up. It ultimately came down to him suiting up in the power armor bay. Walter was still feeling bad vibes from the rest of the crew, but given that he already had interactions with a few people so far, Walter felt he should work towards overcoming it.

The black-haired Minkan walked over to his power armor, and gave it a good look-over. Undamaged, equipped with shoulder-mounted automatic grenade launchers, a sword, nanomachines, and a sturdy toolkit. It just hit Walter that that is quite a contradictory loadout to use.

"Hope for the best, hope for the best...", he muttered before stripping down and entering his Mindy II armor, the fleshy embrace giving him tingles. Walter donned two large ammo belts, feeling the combined weight of everything he was wearing pressing down on him comfortably.

Walter stood across from Arete, stood straight and very imposing, and answered aloud. "Hyde-Hei standing by, Eden-shosa."

As soon as she detected Walter saying "Hyde-Hei", Chlorate immediately tilted her head and turned it to face him. "Walter? Walter Hyde?" she asked, shocked. "But... Were you not in our original universe?" The robot stared at Walter Hyde, utterly confused.

Mark turned to his daughter, "Honey, I want you to stay close to me if you're coming along. I don't want to see you get hurt, alright?", He said before seeing the man who had her attention.

"Ah, Mr. Hyde, I remember you from the convention, nice to see you again.", Mark said trying sound normal while giving a small wave.

In his head he screamed as that was chalk another one to the list he had to hide things from, and observant people like Walter we're his greatest worries.

Alastair had not a clue what was going on. For being one of those expected to lead he seemed to be in the situation often with little information to work with. He had faith in his captain and XO and believed they had a plan. He hoped they had a plan. Please have a plan.

He did at least have the privilege of knowing to suit up before the rest of the crew so was already in his power armor ready to go. His load out was the same as before. One he was becoming very fond of as it gave him great speed and extra firepower.

"Acknowledged Chusa!" The familliar mature voice sounded throughout the bridge structure, belonging to none other than the lovely Separa'shan Systems and Safety operator. Nerai'tha's slender fingertips tapped away at the various keyboards and screens, running through diagnostics yet again. "CFS values nominal, no abnormalties detected, shield and stealth systems running smoothly, weapons ready to go anytime...... all Green here, cap'n~"

On long travels such as this, fulfilling a bridge position could get dreary sometimes. This was especially true for S&S, which sometimes just boiled down to watching gauges and variables, and reiterate them to the rest of the bridge crew from time to time. Thankfully her nimble fingers often find their way to the long green bang in front of her face, flicking and twiddling with it for many hours of family friendly entertainment!

In the far back of the room, stood a Mindy-M2-4S at the ready, already donned by it's serpentine user, Abart'huse. Having donned all but his helmet, he kept the big hunk of zesuaium and durandium alloy tucked under his arm, whils using the other to nibble on a small portion of his seemingly limitless supply of homemade chicken jerky, safely tucked inside of the buttpack adorning his waist. Finishing the last chunk in his hand, the snake gave a firm salute in the direction of the XO, announcing his readiness. "Theisilis-hei, suited up and awaiting orders, Teien-shosa."

Now on standby, the snake couldn't resist taking another nibble of his precious snacks, giving it a good whiff with his sniffly tongue, before chewing down on it with delight. "Hmm~" As he enjoyed his snack, he noticed someone fiddling with their glasses while donning the mindy. One of the new recruits, another elysian, whose name he wasn't sure if he remembered. Still, seeing her like that made him curious about something, and as such he slithered closer to Arete, trying to engage in some light conversation... "Hello.....Sus-...Sirinus-hei, was it? Can you see properly without those glasses like that? I didn't know the Mindy could correct for lesser eyesight."

Sacre made her way quietly through the bay to her armor. She could see her recent adventures hadn't dampened Shasse's over enthusiasm any. Sacre guessed that she would probably have to fix her again. As she watched the rest of them putting on their armor, she noticed how even without the HUD telling her who was who in the identical sets of armor. She could tell who was who. It bothered her, she knew too well that any of them getting badly hurt or killed was not going to be a fun experience. She could feel herself already fretting about their safety. She pushed those thought to the side. She would do her job, and she would be a professional doing it.

... I'm sorry what? These people actually know me?! Walter didn't react to Chlorate and Mark, at least not immediately. How the hell did I end up on the same ship as my double?! I was warned that I could have a chance to run into him, but I didn't even think I'd end up on the ship he was in! What can I even do?! He couldn't think of anything to say to them, and began to silently look for a way out of a conversation with the two.

Then, Walter saw a way out, albeit not the kind he was looking for. A snake-person was clearly hitting on Arete, and that rubbed him the wrong way. He'd normally bottled that up, but... Keeping the nature of his identity secret took a higher priority. "I will have to put you on hold." He responded, impartial and cold, and promptly left them, making a beeline to Abart.

His mood changes suddenly, putting on a metaphorical mask in front of the two. "Hey there, you're Abart'huse, right? I heard you're a top-grade infantry member around here. I wanted to tell you that that's pretty impressive!" Walter put up his hand to the Seperan for him to shake. "I'm Walter Hyde! Good to meet you!"

The undersized woman turned as the snakeman approached, blinking as her eyes rapidly focused. "Well uh, I can see properly but not really at y'know like longer ranges, but the Mind-"

Shasse had been searching for Darwin and Miles as neither had decided to show themselves yet and her patience was beginning to run out as she stood with arms crossed tapping her armour clad foot, looking around at the others who were at various stages of suiting up again to double check she hadn't missed them someone else caught her eye. Moving over to confirm her suspicions she heard a name she hadn't heard in a while, Walter Hyde, her ears twitched and she ran over to the group and straight into Walter almost tripping over in the process.

"Walter! Why are you here and when did you come back I thought you had gone." Her expression while still her usual happy smile hid a dangerous look in her eyes which were boring into him. "And why didn't you tell me you were leaving, I expected a little more courtesy but clearly I was wrong to expect that from you. Do the characters in your fan fictions use manners or are they like you too?" The small blue neko looked around at Arete and then to Abart, "Hey Abart, did you know he was leaving or coming back for that matter?"

At that moment Miles stepped through the door to the PA bay and silently made his way to his own mindy, he glanced over and saw the commotion around Walter and the others and simply nodded before continuing to his armour preparing to suit up. He wasted no time in methodically checking his equipment and suit after he'd donned the mindy and placed the helmet atop his head, "Belmont hei, Miles, reporting combat ready." He spoke with little tone or presence, as though simply replying to a roll call and nothing more.

William slipped into the power armor bay silently as everyone chatted amongst themselves. He hadn't been seen much recently, spending much of his time in his room, or off to Nightwalker Station to meet with his father. After the latest trip, a new PA had been delivered for William's use. An AIR2 sat off to one side of the room. It was colored jet black, with blood red accents. It was also customized with three metallic sheaths for William's swords.

He walked over to it and stripped off his jacket, exposing his back. If anyone were to look, they would see a massive scar running down his back. Running where his spine should be were several small metal pieces that overlapped each other as they ran down his spine. He stowed his clothing into a locker and slipped his swords into their sheathes, before linking with his new armor and popping the seal. William stepped inside his armor and closed his eyes as the back half of the armor closed around him. Things were dark, before he felt two lines plug into the ports on his neck. In his eye, the heads up display came to life and the armor began it's startup sequence.

Alastair looked over to Walter. "Welp, seems like your popular on this ship my young friend." He said with a smile. He then gave Arete and Abart'huse a quick wave. He had expected some ships to form but this was moving along very well. He was glad the crew was getting comfortable with one another. The jealous impulse of Walter as Abart'huse talked with Arete was just too good.

"Get your meet and greets out of the way. Once on the mission it is game time and we shall focus on our objective." Whatever that might be.

Somehow, Wyatt had managed to weave around the rest of the people who were donning their armour and making other preparations, while also slipping into the him-sized, gelled interior that had he had become so accustomed to. It almost felt like a warm embrace from an old friend, despite him having not been on a mission since he got on the ship for uhh, varying reasons.

Regardless, the suit closed around him and hissed as it sealed up, the helmet went on immediately and he stood there, making sure that everything was in peak working condition, anything else and he would start questioning why the hell these suits were in such high regard. Everything seemed to be holding together and it was telling him there were no issues, so Wyatt stepped forward a bit, the heavy boots of the metal beast feeling as light as a pair of socks as he patched himself into the local comms and spoke.

"Alder-Hei, here" was all that left his lips.

Dang he thought to himself, I missed all this

Walter, a little sweaty from the close call, waved back, and followed up on what Arete said. "Yeah, it's something to be proud of-"

And then...

I can't get a break with these guys; I try something, and it keeps blowing up in my face! Where do I keep going wrong?! Walter felt cornered in a situation that he couldn't fully understand, and it was beginning to get on his nerves. He didn't even know what to do in this situation, either; no matter what he will say, it's just going to be fishy, and he would have to come clean because of it. If he didn't say anything, or removed himself from the situation, then it would probably confirm that he deserted Yamatai... Which is technically true, but there was so much context that he couldn't tell anyone that it may as well be otherwise.

Come on Walter, THINK OF SOMETHING! PLEASE! As Walter struggled, the stress began to show in his posture, and his Mindy creaking from clenching his fists so tightly. His agitation peaked, kicked off his fight-or-flight system, the adrenaline ultimately placed the on-edge Minkan over the breaking point. Uncharacteristic of the Walter Hyde that some people knew, he swiftly punched the wall hard enough to cave the whole panel on itself.

Walter slowly moved his clenched fist away from the wall, gradually simmered down, then looked back at the three. "I'm more irritable than I'd like to be, and I'm sorry. Please excuse me." It wasn't a lie, but he purposely avoided Shasse's question nonetheless. He dismissed himself to a corner of the PA bay so he could hole up and relax.

The Minkan sighed, and rubbed his hand over his helmet in a futile facepalm gesture, feeling like a incredibly shitty person after that... That moment. "Yare yare daze... I wish I knew why, Shasse." Walter sighed, and just hoped that he would not get more attention like that, but that was too much to hope for. It'll just be a matter of time until his cover is blown, and Walter didn't know how to explain himself when the time came.
