In hell.....

Resident Badass
I have been MIA as most of you have seen and here's the reason:

As some of you are aware, my business is a credit report repair business. it is vitally important to keep track of client's information to ensure that their cases are always running on premium 'octane.' I use Act!2006 (which is a fabulous, although slow program for this).

Last week, my Norton expired and I still had Limewire on my computer.

HELLLLLLLOOOOOOO Trojans!

I believe we counted five along with many many other viruses that suddenly corrupted ACT! so badly that I could neither run it nor delete it nor re-install it. Thankfully I had backed it up before all of this shit had happened.

From Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday...from 8:30 in the morning until 9:30 at night I fought and researched and fought to correct everything and essentially corrected nothing. Even with four hours of a technician's help (which did NOTHING), I'm back to start.

THEREFORE....we have to completely back everything up and wipe my harddrive of everything.

Sorry that I've been quiet, but now you know why. Please bear with me until I can get this fixed.

Tifferzzz, I know I have screamed this at numerous other people, but NORTON IS CRAP. You may want to try to get AVG They also have a program called Ewido which is also nice, Maccafee supposedly good, A squared is pretty good anti-crap program. Try those before whiping your hard drive.

I used and have used McAfee for awhile. Its good, but it can slow down less powerful PCs. Norton on the other hand was broken by a virus when I used it. What self respecting virus scan is vulnerable to viruses I ask you.

If you are going to spend money on an Antivirus cient, get NOD32.

It has a light foot print (you wont notice it running) and catches more known and unknown virus then other AV programs.

Almost everyone at the 'computer security' websites I visit use NOD32.

~Dances and jiggies and does other such moves~ It worked! It f'ing worked! Reformatting the entire computer fixed all of its problems. Happy happy joy joy. ~Feels the need to cry~ Alright so I have a question. AVG will protect my computer or is it just a scanning deletion program?

Well, AVG has three forms, Free, which has a perma Guard system, routine system scan, auto updates and numerous other bells and whistles, Paid, which has a perma guard and other little ins and outs, and Soho which I dunno what it has. Ewido, has two forms paid and free, Paid happens to auto update *twirls his finger in the air* and happens to have a perma guard as well where as the free version has both for 30 days.

I'm not aware of any anti virus program that can stop an infection from happening. They can't even scan a file until it is on your computer or network. Some of them can identify and quarantine a virus that is on your system before it runs, and causes damage, but the files are still on your system by that time. They are responsible for identifying an infection and correcting it.

Prevention is the area of Firewalls. ZoneAlarm has good marks with the community as a free option. I'd recommend it for personal use, if you don't want to spend money.

However, this is for your business. With that in mind, you don't want to rely on some system that comes free and is a do-it-yourself rig. For a business, especially a credit business, where people's personal information is in your care, you need professional protection. You probably have legal obligations to protect your client's privacy. Trojans who harvest that kind of data target unprotected businesses, and if that info gets out, you could be looking at a lawsuit. That sort of thing can't be left in the hands of someone who thinks they know what they are doing just because they have replaced their own RAM. And if your IT people let you down like this, for the most basic of things, virus protection, you may need to consider getting yourself some better IT people.

What the hell are you using LimeWire for at work anyways?

So far, I have found that a combination of spysweeper and micro pc-cillian has proven extremely effective against the curses of virus-software.

And Pc cillian is constantly updating like every day or so!

talk about a handy programie!
