Forum software update

There's been some suggestion that I take over responsibility for hosting the forum and give it an update, so I thought I'd post my thoughts here:

  • I'm willing to do it and to put some money into it.
  • I've been running Star Army's RP forum for 14 years so I have a lot of experience in hosting a site and running a forum. I've been a member of Ayenee since 2000 so I'm not just some random dude. Ayenee is important to me.
  • I own Ayenee.org (currently I have it redirecting here) and I would probably move this site back to that domain.
  • This board software is really outdated. I would convert this board into a new XenForo installation. I think I could do it without losing any posts.
  • If I could get the previous forum's database, I may be able to import that one into the XenForo board too!
  • The end goal would be to make this into an active RP site again, not just a place for nostalgic memories (although those are always welcome).

Let me know if there's interest.

Wes already knows my thoughts on it, but I'll post it here for the record of anyone interested.

Currently the hosting is being handled by another staff member. He's made it known to the rest of the staff that he's willing to hand hosting over to someone who will be able to put the time and money into updating it.

Wes does a very good job with Star Army, and while the nature of Ayenee simply being what it is won't allow for the exact same process from there to here, he's got the necessary experience to successfully run an RP board.

Oh shit, this site is still going? Haven't been here in a grip.

I remember Wes from way back. I have no objections with him taking the mantle.

Also the XenForo software he is talking about is pretty slick. They use it on SmallFormFactor.net and it is really nice from both mobile clients and desktops. Good post notifications when you log in as well.

I've waited months for a response from the admin but nothing's happened.

I tried, guys. :(

If you need me you know where to find me (Star Army).

Wes, or Virus message me and tell me what you need to get this running, if I have it I'll pass it along. Just made Wes a full Administrator so that should give him all the abilities I or Madi have.

Congratulations Wes. {Grins.} Mith, if you mean Virus as in me, I don't have the full tech know-how for the boards, and plus I'm rarely showing myself around due to life, but I do peek in periodically to see if any trouble can be made. {Grins and slaps da Mith with a Koi, then fades.}

If Madi's involvement isn't likely, I may actually be of some assistance in this. It wouldn't be my first time helping a forum out of a troublesome hosting situation, though what I can accomplish will depend on the specifics of the situation.

I've moved several forums in the past, with or without the involvement of the host. Since I'm fond of you, I'd be willing to spare some time looking into it for you. I've done more for people I liked less.

Somehow my account got merged into Ceros, but other than that the move seems to have gone very successfully.

Thanks everyone for your support and patience.

If you've the patience for another go at it, the account squishing may be due to unique keyfields you shared with the account on the original Xenforo install.

e.g.

You make a new Xenforo with userid 1 = Wes
Import replaces userid 1 with Cero
userid Wes in imported content gets replaced with Cero

You may be able to dodge the account merge by creating a new install with a nonsense account (no shared data with any other accounts) and importing into that.

Oh, but if you only had the handful of posts in this thread, you might be able to just change ownership. idk if XenForo has that ability built in, but if not it shouldn't be too difficult to do so via SQL.

Nah, I didn't have that much of a post history anyway, and it's not worth doing all that work over again just for a few posts.
