Babe in the Woods: OOC

SJ_the_Bartender

Perma-Newbie
I'm starting a new campaign, more for some of the new people to learn D&D and see if they like it.

Vital Information:

How do I make a character sheet?
Go to http://www.thetangledweb.net/profiler/ and sign up for an account. They don't send you spam or anything, but they do send your password, so use a real email account when signing up. Then use that site to create a character sheet. Do NOT use the 3E Profiler Standard template. Use the d20 3.5 dnd Template. It has a lot of nice features, including Action Points. Here is a sample character sheet that you might want to look at: http://www.thetangledweb.net/profiler/view.php?id=593
Take note of the organization used in Feats/Special Abilities, Currency, and other areas. This might help you organize your sheet better. Once your character sheet is made, you may want to include a link to your character in your signature for easy reference. It helps me and you to get to your sheet and information quickly. See Colvin's signature for an example of this.
Finally, please remember to make your character sheet public, so I can see it.

Where can I find information about the rules for D&D?
The best site I've found for D&D rules is at http://www.d20srd.org and it has all the information you need for a standard D&D campaign.

How will dice rolls be handled?
All rolls will be done through Invisiblecastle.com. You must include your characters name when making a roll, or it does not count. And I must know what name your character will have before you make any rolls, or they do not count. As I said, I am a stickler for rules, and I don't like cheaters. This makes sure that no one is even tempted to cheat.

How do I generate Stats?
We are going to Roll for stats in this game. Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest. Assign the results as you wish.

How much money to I start with?
You have 3 options to choose from:
1. You can take the Starting Package associated with your class.
2. You can take the average starting gold for your class and buy carte blanche.
3. You can roll the starting gold for your class, but you must take the results, even if you get lower than average. There are no rerolls.
If you don't know the starting gold or package for your class, just ask here, and I'll be happy to help you out.
FOR PEOPLE NEW TO D&D, I highly recommend that you take the Starting Package. I will tell you what equipment you get when you select your Class.

Do you have any special 'house' rules?
I've gotten rid of my house rules for this campaign, since its for people who are new to D&D, but here are a few special things that you may want to keep in mind:
Be a Self-Starter: I tend to be a very reactive DM. I don't force your characters to do things. I only tell you what happens as a result of your actions. This sometimes leaves players feeling unsure of what they should do next. I don't expect that to be a big problem with people from Ayenee, but if you do feel that way, think about the things you've learned in the past. Think about your goals, and if you still can't come up with a plan of action, then ask me, and I'll see what I can do about giving you a nudge. Otherwise, I won't give you direction, because I expect you to figure out what you are meant to do on your own. This probably won't be a big issue as we start out, because I've got a bit of prodding to do to get you going. But once things are in motion, you'll notice I will become less active in showing you what to do.
That guy is all hands: I expect you to be very cognizant about what is in your hands and what you do with them. I'm less worried about whether you put something in your left pocket, right pocket, backpack, or shoe, but your hands and what is in them is important. Left or Right isn't really important, but always keep track of when they are empty, and when they are full, and if they are full, keep track of what is being held, and what you do with it when it leaves your hands. The reason being is this... Say you fight a kobold with your greatsword. Then you throw a grappling hook up a wall, and climb up it where you fight another kobold with your greatsword. You can't climb a rope while holding a greatsword, so how did you climb the wall while still holding it? Obviously, you couldn't have. But you didn't say you sheathed it, so you must have dropped it down at the bottom of the wall before you started climbing. Now, you are at the top of the wall without a greatsword, and the kobold is going to kill you. How embarassing. So please, keep track of whats in your hands and what happens when something leaves your hands.

How do I play over a message board?
Watch how me and Colvin post. He's done this with me once before and you can pick up a lot from him. Please post the name of your character at the top of every post. Include HP and AC when in combat. This helps me keep track of you. Seperate your IC comments and actions from the OOC information such as rolls. You'll see some examples of this when I make an IC thread, and it will all fall into place.

Does everyone know eachother already, or do we have to form up as a party?
You will all know eachother. I encourage you to come up with backstories that allow you to have your history intertwined with another character.

Are we still playing in Ayenee? Whats different about it?
No. This is not Ayenee. This is not Freeform. This is D&D. I am the Dungeon Master (DM). I control everything. I can even control your character, without your permission. However, unless its something vital to the plot... such as a wizard has taken over your body via mind-control, I will not control your character. Unless stated otherwise, you are in control of your character. You decide what he does, how he reacts, what he thinks about events, and everything else about him. I control everything else in the world. I control the NPCs, the animals, the weather, the Dieties, the bad-ass Dragons, the fleas living in your hair, The Sun, The Moon and everything that is not your character. The following are things that we may share control on. If you have a familiar, an animal companion, a pet, or beast of burden which you have gained control over, or an NPC that you have hired, you maintain some control over their actions, but I can take that control away at any time, or insert some new aspect into their personality. For example, if you command your familiar to attack something in combat, you can make the rolls and describe how it attacks, whether with a bite, or a claw, or whatever... and I won't interfere. And then, next round, you command your familliar to attack something else, but I intervene and say 'Your familiar does not seem to respond to your command.' or something like that.

I want to make a change to my character sheet. Is that ok?
Once you make your first post to the IC, your character sheet is locked in, and you cannot change it. Up until that point, you can make changes. The exception to this rule is your inventory. I expect you to maintain your inventory at all times. If you pick up a stick, it needs to be listed on your inventory. Otherwise, a week later, when you go to retrieve that stick from your backpack, it will have mysteriously vanished. Likely, some rogue stole it while you weren't paying attention.

How often do I have to post?
I expect you to post a minimum of once every Mon, Wed, and Friday. Post every day if possible, but thats the minimum. Even if your character isn't doing anything, post something so the rest of us know you are keeping up with the story. Post about how he's thinking about his mommy's home-cooked stew for all I care. The exception to this rule is during Initiative/Combat scenes. You can skip days if you are waiting for the person before you in initiative to post. However, after they have posted, you are officially on the clock. You can post before the people in front of you if you desire, but then you risk their move doing something that affects your move and you need to fix it before I get to it and lock it in. If for some reason you won't be able to post for a temporary period of time (Vacation, grounded, moving, etc) let me know before you go missing. I'll impose a -50 XP penalty per day missed without notification. And yes, posting on tues does count towards your mon deadline. So if you post every tues, thurs, and saturday, that is fine, and will meet the requirements.

Roster:
Illogical - Ashina - Halfling Rogue - White
Mith - Enos - Half-Elf Paladin - Grey
Lowthor - Sennoth - Human Sorcerer - Blue
Colvin - Phaeder - Elf Ranger - Green
Tifferz - Serenity - Human Barbarian - Yellow

~Notes that she didn't VOLUNTARILY sign up and wonders who else will get recruited. Thinks that the US Military should hire SJ to recruit. Would also like to note that she is not a 'new person.'~

For right now, you should start by thinking about what kind of character you want to play. Do you want to be a fighter, who excells at combat? A Cleric, who heals the wounds of his comanions, and fights against evil? A Rogue who likes to sneak up on his oppnents and attack their weak spots and handle traps the party encounters? Or a Wizard, casting spells and bending the fabric of the universe to his will?
There are other characters who are all based more or less on these four base classes. A Bard, who is a jack of all trades and a master of none, capable at doing just about anything but not as good as the more focused class. The bard can also use music to aid his allies in combat and bolster their spirits. A Barbarian, a fighter from the wilds who uses his rage to increase his strength for short bursts. A Druid, who worships nature, summons animals to his aid, and eventually can shift into animal form to gain their strengths. A Monk, an exotic warrior who uses speed and agility to master his unarmed attacks rather than using brutish weapons. He also masters his own body to become a living weapon. A Paladin, the holy warrior in service of his gods, capable of fighting on the front lines, and also some minor healing abilities. Eventually the paladin gains a holy animal companion, and can cast some minor divine magics. The ranger is the master of the wilderness, using the bow, and tracking down prey are specialties. The Sorcerer is a magic user who doesn't need any spell book to cast spells, and relies instead of his inner force of character.

Race is also important. Humans... Elves(favorite for wizards)... Dwarves(favorite for fighters)... Halflings(favorite for rogues)... All standards from Tolkien and should need no explanation. Half-Elves are the result of human and elf mating. They are graceful humans or unusually strong elves. Half-Orcs(favorite for barbarians) are the result of mating between humans and orcs. They are not usually pretty or smart, but if you try telling them that, they've got the muscle to pound you into hamburger. Gnomes(favorite for bards) are small humanoids, who have a flair for tinkering and love a good practical joke.

I think...if I'm allowed to participate...I'll go with an Half-elven - Sorcerer

Yes, I've played about 4 or 5 games. I'm no expert but I have a basic knowledge of the game.

I'm not new to either the forums or D&D now but I would fill in a spot if you need it. I wanted to try out a Elven Ranger. *shrugs* I am really enjoying these TT RPs =D

Alright. You're in.

Colvin - Elven Ranger
Baka - Half-Elf Sorcerer
Tifferzz - Human Barbarian
Mith - ? Paladin?
Illogical - Halfling Rogue

Looking at this, we could probably have a pretty kick-ass Wilderness campaign right off the bat. The only trick would be how the Paladin would fit in.

I just edited in a ton of information into the first post of this thread. Some of it won't make sense to you yet, and thats ok. If you read something that you don't understand, post the question here and I will explain it for you. More than likely, someone else will be glad that you asked because they didn't know the answer either, but were too shy to ask. Everyone here is pretty new to the game, so don't feel like you are the only one who doesn't know what HP and AC means, or how to roll 4d6.

The sheet itself is pretty self-explanatory at first. If you have any questions about what to put there you can consult SJ or me. For most of the stuff under the stats thing I would suggest SJ since I am sorta new myself but if you have any questions about something just click on the link underneath the section or next to it. It will give you an explanation of how things should be put there most of the time. I think we've all established that you are all new to this so its understandable. Happy character making =D

I have no idea what a Starting Package for a Ranger looks like. I have been looking like everywhere for some basis. Can you help me out with how much gold I'd start out with and stuff? and could I start off with a shortbow or something like that right off the bat? Oh and I have seen some differences with starting Hit Die with Rangers on different version. I just go with what the SRD says right?

Woo lots of questions

The starting package of equipment for a ranger consists of:

Studded Leather Armour
A longsword
A short sword
A longbow
Backpack with waterskin
Trail rations for 1 day
Bedroll
Sack
Flint & Steel
3 torches
1 quiver of 20 arrows.

Left over with 2d4 gold (roll for it, or ask SJ about this part).

Otherwise: To roll for your coin, roll 6d4x10. Average gold is 150 gold.

Ok, so I've got a few people working on character sheets.

Mith, Illogical, and Tiff are all in progress to varying degrees.

Colvin, I haven't seen yours, but I assume you are almost done since you are asking about the Starting package. and yes, you just go with the SRD.

Baka, I haven't seen anything from you yet. Are you working on it? Any problems? Maybe you are already done?

I still need to know how much gold I can get. I want to go with that starting package up there but still need to know about the gold. And I need to know about how many skill points I get. I think its only 24 or something because I have no Int modifier but just checking
