Somewhere in the Farthest Reaches of Space

A violent explosion of light momentarily lit up the void as an starship crossed over in the universe of Ayenee. To the people back home, this was just another ship in mothballs, but secretly the old ship, Ayame-class YSS Listener (YC-31) with its trans-universal drive, was secretly still on duty for Star Army Intelligence. As the venerable mother-ship activated its stealth systems and went to go hide somewhere, a smaller ship, the Hayai-class stealth gunboat YSS Pliable, emerged from its shadow and disappeared into hyperspace in a shimmer of teal.

Ayenee Star System

The Pliable shimmered back into realspace in the outskirts of the Ayenee system and immediately began conducting its regular scans to check on how things were going. It had a sleek form with black hull paint and the Star Army "hinomaru" logo on the top.

YSS Pliable - Bridge

A cat-eared woman in royal blue and white uniform reclined in a fancy leather captain's chair. "Send to the planet on all standard communications frequencies: To whom in may concern, this is Captain Hasumi-Taii Skuld of the Star Army of Yamatai. We are happy to report that the war with the Qel'noran Industrial Sector has ended and that the year YE 38 has begun. We are standing by to receive transmissions from those who wish to contact the Empire of Yamatai."

Marcus sat at his family's deli in one of the booths. It was a slow day and there wasn't a huge need for him to be there. Just when he'd begun humoring the thought of talking his sister into a round of Zhang Gra, the phone with the Equilibrium logo on it rang in the case on Marcus' belt.

He answered it. "Equilibrium, fitness division. This is Marcus."

"Marcus, it's Ed from Galacom."

Marcus cringed. Equilibrium had partnered with Galacom a couple years back. They had plans to expand into inter-universal dealings, and Galacom was how they'd planned on doing it. If Ed was calling that meant Marcus was being put on a very long trip assignment.

"Alright cut through the pleasant greetings, Ed. Where are they sending me?"

"Yamatai Empire. One of their ships has just arrived in our space offering communication. They report that their was is over. Great time to start up a few franchise locations." Ed was thrilled.

Marcus wasn't. He sighed. "Alright, fine. Send me the frequency I'll make contact."

"You're the best, Marcus." Ed hung up. A moment later, his phone displayed a frequency code and call sign for the visiting ship.

Marcus entered the frequency and hit the comm button. Here his months of preparation for these journeys became worthwhile. He knew precisely what they were going to want. "Pliable, this is Marcus Rodia. Vice President fitness division for Equilibrium corporation requesting transport for business interaction. I have an open comm frequency for location search and can meet at any of the nearby space ports. Background information can be found on file, as well."

He knew the procedure. He left the diner with a quick wave to his sister and headed to his car to wait for the location where they wanted to meet.

The radio crackled to life as the military starship responded. "Mr. Rodia, this is Hasumi-Taii. I copy your transmission. We are dispatching a shuttle to your location. Please standby for transport. If you would please count down from one hundred while we track your location..."

Minutes later...

A gleam in the sky grew into a weathered-looking little shuttle craft not much larger than a typical van. It had four engines and a splotchy green camouflage pattern on the top and a cadet blue underside. This shuttle flew overhead twice and then came around for a landing in the parking lot of an abandoned furniture store on the edge of town. Soon a column of cyan smoke rose from the landing site to mark the way for Marcus.

When he arrived, he would find two figures completely clad in body armor and a third in an olive drab jumpsuit and blue "Donald Duck" sailor cap that said STAR ARMY across the front in gold embroidery. She had large dark brown eyes, spruce green hair in a flapper bob cut. All three of the soldiers appeared to be female and they were all strapped.

"Greetings," the one in the hat said, giving Marcus a polite bow. "Marcus Rodia?" she inquired, followed by a curt "get his bags" to her subordinates.

One of the armored ones bounced over and began to move his stuff towards the shuttle, but not before opening everything and inspecting the contents with some sort of scanner.

"I am Brynhildr Hamasaki, Nito Heisho. Logistics specialist for the YSS Pliable. Please step aboard to start your trip to Yamatai," she gestured. "We can do the paperwork in flight."

"Roger, Ma'am. I await your arrival."

He did precisely that. The diner wasn't far from where the shuttle had set down.

Upon arrival, he gladly handed over his two small bags. Most of the contents were business related with only a couple changes of clothing. He knew he was going to have to acquire more appropriate attire wherever he was headed.

He nodded to the Logistics officer as he complied and stepped aboard. "That works fine for me. I'm under your direction."

Shuttle

Soon, they were leaving the planet behind. The two armored soldiers took off their helmets and sat in the back of the passenger area, and Marcus sat in one of the remaining four seats with Brynhildr across from him handing him data pads full of visa forms and legal notices and offering him coffee, tea, and cheesecake from the mini-fridge while an unseen pilot was up in the cockpit.

After a short trip, they arrived at the Pliable, which space-folded back to the Listener, which blinked out of existence as quickly as it had arrived. By the end of the day, Marcus would find himself in another universe...
