I've noticed that a pm just sent will show up as being read when it hasn't.

Ok, after further research, I've found that if you just look at sent messages, they all show as 'read' because you have read them. you are the one who sent them and typed them so of course you have read them.
However, I assume that you want to know which of your messages have been read by the recipient. In order for that to happen, you need to check the little box down at the bottom of the screen saying 'request read receipt' when you send a new PM. Then, in your UserCP, select Track Messages to see which ones have been read and which haven't.
You can delete those messages I sent you as tests, too.
